The Centre of Medical Biotechnology (ger.:Zentrum fuer medizinische Biotechnologie, ZMB) was the last module completing the Biopark Regensburg. In this facility scientists from the university hospital apply their huge knowledge in fields of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Seven groups from different disciplines of the university and hospital are working on an area of 500 sqm.
The new competence centre in the Biopark was solemnly inaugurated by the minister of economic affairs Dr. Otto Wiesheu. He emphasized the enormous and unique relevance of the CMB for Regensburg and Bavaria. The institute is financially supported by the university and outlines a new economic profile for the university and BioRegio Regensburg. For years clinicians from numerous hospital departments in Regensburg work on fields of tissue engineering. Artificial cornea is developed, reconstructive surgery after accidents and tumor resections are investigated as well as bone regeneration for tooth implants and defect repair by chondrocyte transplantation in articular cartilage. The regenerative medicine offers a huge sphere of activity. Also independent companies like Si4Health GmbH are working in fields of tissue engineering in the development and marketing of innovative composite material for replacement of tissue regarding wound healing. The CMB is the second competence centre in the Biopark. 2002 the centre for fluorescent bio-analysis was established in Regensburg to concentrate know-how and experiences on this field in one institute. The CMB was arranged to apply clinical research on medical products and small spin-off companies are expected to emanate from the fruitful collaborations. A research group comprising of representatives from local companies, universities and the government is working already on a competence centre for sensor systems and proteomics in Regensburg.
