09/18/2013 - Hans Gruber awarded "Senior Fellow (Vanhempi asiantuntija) at the Faculty of Education, University Turku"

For the period of 1 Sept 2013 to 31 Aug 2018, Hans Gruber was granted the title "Senior Fellow (Vanhempi asiantuntija) at the Faculty of Education, University Turku, Finland". The Dean of the Faculty of Education, prof Marja Vauras, writes: "The title of Senior Fellow is an honorary title that can be awarded to a person who is academically especially distinguished and has such expertise that expands the knowledge of the university. Your experience strengthens the Faculty's experience in the research in learning, professional development and expertise. (...) This has resulted in accepted research funding proposals, international publications and more international research environment at the department."


09/09/2013 - Our group at the EARLI

RWL Stirling 2013From 27-31 August 2013 the EARLI 2013 conference – 15th Biennial European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction Conference – starting with the JURE pre-conference (26-27 August 2013) took place in Munich, Germany. The EARLI is the largest conference in Europe in the field of instructional and educational research. Together with our colleagues from Regensburg our research group attended both conferences and participated in several session. At JURE pre-conference our research group participated in three sessions and at the EARLI conference in four sessions.

09/05/2013 - Helen Jossberger at the ECEM

From 11-16 August 2013 the ECEM – 17th European Conference on Eye Movements – took place in Lund, Sweden. The ECEM is the world’s largest conference on eye movement research offering a programme with much innovative and interesting research in diverse domains. Helen Jossberger, Ph.D., attended the conference and participated in a symposium on ‘Visual Expertise in Medicine’.

RWL Stirling 2013 RWL Stirling 2013

Professor Stephen Billett (Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia) and Professor Christian Harteis (University Paderborn, Germany) visited our research group. Profs Billett, Harteis, and Gruber are the editors of the Springer International Handbook of Research in Professional Practice-Based Learning.

The handbook is scheduled to be published in 2014. The meeting served the purpose to finalise the manuscript.


08/29/2013 - Prof. Gruber President-elect of EARLI

Prof. Hans Gruber was elected President-elect of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI). EARLI is a scientific community with a broad mission to promote an active research culture in the field of learning and instruction. EARLI has developed through sustained initiative, shared values and commitment to promote the ongoing development and use of reliable knowledge on all aspects of teaching and learning, ranging from motivation to learning processes and metacognition, to teaching in diverse contexts and teacher education. EARLI pursues academic rigour as a value that defines the quality of both the procedures and the research outcomes that are reported within the community. EARLI has about 2700 members from 56 countries.


08/28/2013 - Helen Jossberger Assistant Editor of ERR

Helen Jossberger, Ph.D., was appointed as Assistant Editor of the Educational Research Review (ERR) 2014-2018. ERR is an international journal addressed to researchers and various agencies interested in the review of studies and theoretical papers in education at any level. In the Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports the ERR is ranked 8th in the worldwide list of 216 journals in the field of Educational Science and Educational Psychology. David Gijbels (University of Antwerp, Belgium) was appointed Editor-in-Chief of ERR.


08/26/2013 - New to the chair: Michael Scheumann, M.A.

In August 2013 the Faculty of Psychology, Educational Science and Sport Science welcomed a new staff member. After completing his studies (M.A. Educational Science) at the University of Regens-burg in late summer of 2012 Michael Scheumann now supports the Chair for Educational Science III in the fields of teaching and scientific function.

Currently there’s a research cooperation among the Chair for Educational Science III and the Chair for Anesthesiology (Prof. Dr. Graf and PD Dr. Zausig) at the University Hospital of Regensburg. It’s aim is to optimize the actual cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training for medical students, focusing non-technical skills such as communication, resource management, leadership and the capacity for teamwork. These skills have proved to have a positive impact on CPRs. Based on this multi-year project several master theses have already been composed. Further theses and especially papers for professional journals are about to follow .


07/15/2013 - Educational equality - a debate

Im Rahmen des interdisziplinären Seminar "Bildungsethik" (Professor Dr. Bernhard Laux, Dr. Bernhard Bleyer, Theologische Anthropologie und Werteorientierung; Professor Dr. Hans Gruber, Lehr-Lern-Forschung) fand am 10. Juli 2013 im voll besetzten Großen Sitzungssaal des PT-Gebäudes eine Podiumsdiskussion zum Thema Bildungsgerechtigkeit statt. Die Debatte war Teil der landesweiten Ringvorlesung "Verantwortung leben. Ethik der gesellschaftlichen Verantwortung" im Wertebündnis Bayern. Als Diskutanten waren Herr Professor Dr. Guido Pollak (Universität Passau), Herr Max Schmidt (Vorsitzender des Bayerischen Philologenverbandes) und Studierende des Lehramtes Katholische Theologie und der Erziehungswissenschaft (Sebastian Koch, Johanna Pretzl, Eva-Maria Schmidt, Andreas Widmann) beteiligt. Im Publikum befanden sich eine Schulklasse des Gymnasiums Pfaffenhofen sowie mehrere Schulleiter/innen, aber auch Professor/inn/en verschiedener Fakultäten der Universität. Es wurde deutlich, dass Bildungsgerechtigkeit ein wichtiges, vielschichtiges Thema ist, dem sich Universität, Schule und Arbeitswelt ausdrücklich widmen müssen, um Bildung den angemessenen Stellenwert beizumessen. Hierfür ist eine Ausweitung der ethischen Reflexion der Beteiligten notwendig.

07/09/2013 - reAKTIV at the 63rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting

Together with Prof. Dr. Oliver Reiser (Chair for Organic Chemistry) Klaus Rögner represented the University of Regensburg at the 63rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting with an information booth.

In a presentation, developed solely for this event, interactive components of reAKTIV where integrated into the presentation of chemical faculties. Thereby the over 800 participants from all over the world could take part in interactive Questions with the help of their own mobile devices (like smartphones and tablets) or make use of the equipment provided at the booth. With that, the practical use of reAKTIV in lectures was illustrated and the visitors could test their chemical knowledge on the basis of faculty-specific quiz questions.

The Bavarian Minister for Science, Research and Arts, Dr. Wolfgang Heubisch, wouldn't have missed the chance to visit the booth and to be informed by Prof. Reiser about the project.

Prof. Dr. Gruber took part in RWL (Researching Work and Learning) from June 19th to 21st of 2013 in Stirling.

Take educators of the next generation on „inclusion course“.

Eine aktuell entscheidende bildungspolitische Herausforderung stellt die Inklusion, die gleichberechtigte Teilhabe aller Menschen am Leben der Gesellschaft dar. Bildung ist darin ein wesentlicher Bestandteil. Wie soll das inklusive Bildungssystem aussehen? Wird in den meist bildungsstrukturellen Diskussionen auch das Profil der zukünftigen „Inklusions-Padägogen“ an Regelschulen diskutiert oder geht es nur um die Antwort der polemischen Frage: Abschaffung der Förderschulen ja oder nein? Sollte stattdessen nicht gefragt werden: Was können, oder besser: müssen die Lehrkräfte im Regelschulsystem von ihren Kollegen in den Förderzentren, den „Inklusions-Experten“ lernen, damit sie die Schülern mit besonderem Förderbedarf auch bestmöglich fördern?

05/06/2013 - Prof. Dr. Gruber speaker for the Head of Institute

Because of the withdrawal of Prof. Dr. Stöger on May 6th, 2013 Prof. Gruber, up until then acting speaker, took over the role of speaker for the Head of Institute for Educational Science.


05/06/2013 - Doctoral candidate meeting at the convent Plankstetten

Convent Plankstetten

Together with the Chairs for Educational Science I & II, as well as the Chair for School Pedagogics the professors Regina Mulder, Klaus-Peter Wild, Hans Gruber and Heidrun Stöger from May 2nd til 4th 2013 invited to a meeting, where 26 doctoral candidates of all chairs took part.

Opened by a workshop held by Prof. Dr. Gruber with the topic Academic Writing, the next days presentation and review sessions of the seperate dissertation projects followed. The doctoral candidates were able to ask for feedback as well as to get some in roundtable discussions.

All participants gave a positive summary and were extremely satisfied with the structural design, the professional discussions and not least with the personal interaction between the participants. Holding a further meeting has been set for the next year.

Prof. Dr. Michael Henninger

On Thursday, May 2 (12-2 pm), Prof. Dr. Michael Henninger from PH Weingarten will give a talk about the relevance of communication in medical education and in the workplace. He will introduce the programmes CaiMan and mBased and explain conception, development, and implementation.

04/29/2013 - Funding for international scholar approved

We are happy to announce that the funding we applied for at the beginning of the year to invite an international scholar was approved. During the winter term (2013/2014) Academy Professor Erno Lehtinen from Turku (Finland) will be in Regensburg.

He will offer two courses. One course deals with ‘Research Traditions in Learning and Development’ and in the other course insights into ‘Long-term Development of Number Concept’ are provided. We look forward to the visit and inspiring courses.


03/20/2013 - reAKTIV at the conference "Gute Lehre - gesucht und geteilt"

On March 18th and 19th, at the invitation of Stifterverband für die deutsche Wissenschaft the conference "Gute Lehre - gesucht und geteilt" ["Good teaching - searched and shared"] took place in Berlin. There, Klaus Rögner represented the cooperative project reAKTIV, in which the chairs for Organic Chemistry of Prof. Dr. Oliver Reiser and Prof. Dr. Burkhard König, as well as the chair for Educational Science III of Prof. Dr. Hans Gruber and the chair for school pedagogics of Prof. Dr. Heidrun Stöger are involved.

As director of studies of reAKTIV, Mr. Rögner first presented the project in a poster session, where the initiative was well received, as well as afterwards in a workshop themed "Teaching and learning in big groups". 03/15/2013 - Erasmus Teacher Mobility: Visit in Turku

In March, Markus Hirschmann and Helen Jossberger participated in the Erasmus Teacher Mobility Programme. They were involved in a course on workplace learning, in which they provided interactive sessions for international Master students at the University of Turku, Finland. Markus Hirschmann provided a session on cognitive and socio-cultural theories of learning in the workplace, while Helen Jossberger talked about the role of self-regulated learning in vocational education and the workplace. Moreover, the stay in Turku was used to discuss research ideas and collaborate with colleagues at Turku University.


03/14/2013 - Lund Eye Tracking Academy (LETA)

In February, Helen Jossberger attended the Lund Eye Tracking Academy (LETA) at the Lund University Humanities Laboratory in Sweden, which is an intensive three days course in eye tracking. The course provides theoretical understanding and practical advice with hands-on activities on how to design an experiment, how to record high-quality data, and how to analyse the collected data. 02/26/2013 - Consulting teachers in school: More educational-psychological knowledge necessary

Prüfungsangst, Drogenprobleme, Mobbing und vieles mehr: Beratungslehrer an einer Schule kümmern sich um eine Reihe von Themen, die Offenheit und Vertrauen erfordern. Im Falle der Beratung übernehmen sie eine andere Rolle als im Unterricht, für den sie in Studium und Referendariat ausgebildet wurden. Sind Beratungslehrer ihrem Job vor diesem Hintergrund wirklich gewachsen? Welche Unterschiede bestehen zwischen ihnen und professionellen Erziehungsberatern oder Schulpsychologen? Forscher der Universität Regensburg haben sich mit diesen Fragen beschäftigt. Ihre Ergebnisse legen nahe, dass grundlegendes pädagogisch-psychologisches Wissen für die schulische Beratungspraxis systematisch erarbeitet werden sollte.

Prof. Dr. Hans Gruber vom Institut für Pädagogik der Universität Regensburg führte gemeinsam mit Dr. Josef Strasser (jetzt Universität Augsburg) eine Studie durch, bei der erfahrene Beratungslehrer mit professionellen Beratern – Erziehungsberater unterschiedlicher Erfahrungsstufen – während der Bearbeitung eines Beratungsfalles miteinander verglichen wurden. Insgesamt 16 Lehrerinnen und Lehrer sowie 65 professionelle Berater nahmen an der Studie teil.

Der fiktive Beratungsfall wurde am Computer präsentiert. Die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer an der Studie wurden mit Blick auf die jeweils entwickelten Lösungsmodelle und Herangehensweisen bewertet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich professionelle Erziehungsberater – unabhängig vom Grad ihrer beruflichen Erfahrung – in mehreren Bereichen deutlich von Beratungslehrern unterscheiden. Auffallend waren vor allen Dingen Defizite der Beratungslehrer bei der Falldiagnostik. Gleichzeitig zeigte sich aber, dass Beratungslehrer eine eigene Form von Fachwissen aufbauen und im Verlauf ihrer Entwicklung in einigen Aspekten durchaus zu ähnlichen Lösungsansätzen und Vorgehensweisen kommen wie hauptberufliche Berater.

Bislang werden Beratungslehrer vor allen Dingen in Gesprächsführung, im Umgang mit pubertärem Verhalten oder mit Blick auf unterschiedliche Formen der Lernschwäche geschult. Nach Ansicht der Regensburger Wissenschaftler sollten künftig gerade auch die Fertigkeiten der Urteilsbildung von Beratungslehrern – beispielsweise Methoden der Diagnostik – verstärkt trainiert werden.

Die Ergebnisse der Regensburger Wissenschaftler werden in der renommierten Fachzeitschrift „Empirische Pädagogik“ veröffentlicht.

02/21/2013 - SIG 14 Invited Symposium at EARLI 2013

As junior coordinator of SIG 14 Professional Learning and Development, Helen Jossberger submitted the SIG invited symposium for EARLI 2013. The symposium will be about methodological diversity in investigating Workplace Learning. Jeroen van Merriënboer, Anneli Eteläpelto, and Lorna Unwin will present their exciting research on workplace learning approaching the topic from different methodological perspectives. Sven de Maeyer and Nigel King act as discussants and will critically discuss the state of the art and opportunities for future research. The session will be chaired by Helen Jossberger. 01/30/2013 - Internationalization of universities

In line with „Internationalization of universities" two applications for support were applied by our chair. To promote our integrated international Master Studies with a double degree an application with "Deutschen Akademischen Austausch Dienst" (DAAD) was filed.

Furthermore the Bavarian State Ministry of Sciences, Research and the Arts is assigning subsidies for acquiring visiting professors. With the approval of our application we may welcome Academy Professor Erno Lehtinen from Turku (Finnland) in Regensburg in the next winter term (2013/2014).


01/29/2013 - New intranet appearance of the chair

At last: After months of planning and restructering the new intranet appearance of Prof. Dr. Gruber's chair is online now.

In cooperation of all chair employees it was tried to create a new, more clearly-arranged structure to give visitors a comprehensive overview of the chair's activities and at the same time allow a simpler and more logical navigation.

We hope to have reached that goal and wish all guests much pleasure and information.
