ICIAM 95 follows the tradition of its successful predecessors in Paris (1987) and Washington (1991). These congresses have set new standards for the exchange and distribution of ideas and methods within the community of applied mathematics. The programme reflects new trends in fundamentals of industrial and applied mathematics and its wide range of applications, in particular to numerical analysis.

The trendsetters were Ludwig Prandtl and Richard von Mises, who founded the Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik (GAMM) in 1922. As a legacy of the founding fathers the society promotes scientific development in all areas of applied mathematics, mechanics, and applied sciences in general; GAMM hosted ICIAM 95.

The Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik (GAMM) has published the invited and contributed lectures held at its annual meetings in the Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik (ZAMM) ever since its launching in 1922. GAMM as the host society of ICIAM 95 follows this line. However, this time, the Invited Lectures will not be published in the ZAMM, but in a separate book as the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) has done for ICIAM 91 held at Washington D. C. This book appeared as volume 87 within the series Mathematical Research. As a novelty in the history of the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics, but following the tradition of GAMM and in consideration of the symbiosis of ICIAM 95 and GAMM 95, a selection of the contributions to the Minisymposia and of the Contributed Presentations will be published in special issues of the ZAMM. These special volumes are available to personal members of the sponsoring societies of the Committee for the International Conferences on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CICIAM) at specially reduced prices.

The five special issues of ZAMM contain the following papers from minisymposia, contributed lectures and poster presentations:
