Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik (GAMM) was founded in 1922 by Ludwig Prandtl} and Richard von Mises. The society promotes scientific development in all areas of applied mathematics and mechanics. As legacy of the founding fathers the society cultivates international cooperation in applied mathematics as well as in all areas of mechanics and physics relating to the foundations of the engineering sciences. Historically, the society has played an essential role in the advancement of hydro- and aerodynamics, solid state mechanics as well as numerical and instrumental mathematics. GAMM is a society with a distinctly international orientation currently comprising more than 2500 members including many students.
In memory of Richard von Mises GAMM has established a prize for outstanding scientific achievements, especially for young scientists, in the areas of applied mathematics and mechanics. The prize, including a monetary allowance, is normally awarded annually at the annual GAMM congress.
Application for membership can be made via the business office of GAMM. Anyone having goals in common with those of the society can become a member independent of citizenship or residence. Members are allowed to participate in GAMM events at reduced charges.
Corporate bodies, especially all kinds of groups (like scientific institutes, societies and clubs), can become corporate members of GAMM.
The board of directors of GAMM consists of the President, the Vice--president, the Secretary, the Vice--secretary, the Treasurer, the former Presidents and at least five, but at most twelve additional members.
The conduct of business in GAMM is led by the President and the Vice--president. The Secretary, with the support of the Vice--secretary, manages the daily business in agreement with the President and according to the resolutions of the board of directors.
The Vice--secretary looks after the duties associated with the admittance of new members.
GAMM represents the interests of applied mathematics and mechanics in all areas of education and research politics; the society publishes position papers on training in applied mathematics and on content and extent of training in mathematics for engineering.
GAMM holds memberships in European as well as other international organizations like the European Mathematical Society (EMS), the European Mechanics Society (EUROMECH), the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS) and the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM). Reciprocal agreements exist with the following societies making double membership at reduced rates possible:
In addition, frequent cooperation as well as common speciality or professional groups and committees exist with other German societies (for example: Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung (DMV), Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI)).
GAMM regularly stages its Annual Congresses at varying locations in Germany as well as in other nearby European countries. The Ludwig Prandtl Memorial Lecture, supported jointly with the German Society for Aero- and Astronautics, as well as a broad spectrum of primary lectures in disciplines represented in GAMM are complemented by minisymposia on current developments in applied mathematics and mechanics as well as by sections with short lectures. The sections are dedicated to specialized fields and offer young participants the chance to present their work to colleagues in their fields of specialization.
GAMM also organizes meetings, often in cooperation with other scientific organizations, about special topics in applied mathematics and mechanics. Moreover, the participation at many international conferences is especially broadly distributed among the disciplines represented in GAMM.
GAMM presently has the following activity groups:
The activities of the society outside the Annual Congresses are extensively shaped and determined by the activity groups. These groups, where GAMM members of common specialization meet, contribute essentially to the continued development of potentially significant areas of applied mathematics and mechanics. With the purpose of fulfilling this function, these groups organize seminars and workshops, participate in organizing large national and international congresses and they produce position papers on specific problems from the viewpoint of the groups.
More information and application forms for membership may be obtained from the business office.
