Greetings from Dr. Wolfgang Heubisch
It is not without reason that the Stone Bridge is emblazoned on the seal of the University of Regensburg. It implies that our institute of higher education should act as a bridge. The purpose of our project SPACES is to build bridges between science and art, research and teaching, lower education and higher education. Beyond creating the foundation for connecting different areas of education, we strive to promote interaction and exchange of knowledge between different academic disciplines- from the natural sciences, psychology, and educational science to the visual arts.
As a result of our goals, the people involved with this project are as diverse as the disciplines we are trying to bring together. Scientists and artists are participating as well as primary school students, university students, and teachers. United under the motto “SPACES” people from all academic groups can share their points of view and we can create a collective idea of how space is perceived by an individual and shaped by their ideas. Further, we begin to see how diverse the perception of space can be. It is fascinating, for example, when a Scientist, a Musician, and an Architect meet to share their views. This collaboration is not a place to find definitive answers, but embodies the idea that the project SPACES is an invitation to understand oneself without the shackles of preconceived notions, to change ones perspective, to question the known, and to promote an increase of awareness.
In this sense, I wish for the international conference SPACES to help participants create a common space to allow the formation of new experiences and to stimulate the resolve to increase knowledge across disciplines.
