AMS - DATABASE This electronic version of Hesbert's Antiphonale Missarum Sextuplex was created with the programme dBASE III PLUS to facilitate the creation of new inventories of sources containing the proper chants of mass. The new inventory should be able to incorporate information about the presence of chants in AMS, giving some indication of the age of the chants. In addition the database can be used as a substitute for Hesbert's own indices. The database is placed here at the disposal of colleagues in accordance with the aims of the IMS Study Group 'Cantus Planus', which promotes cooperation in computer-assisted projects and the exchange of data in electronic form. The database is not a critical edition of the incipits. Orthography has been regularized to some extent, as follows: capitalization is abandoned; ae and oe become e j becomes i, as do ih(-esus, -erusalem) and hi(-erusalem) adst- becomes ast- adn- and adt- become ann- and att- inl- and inm- become ill- and imm- -ti- is preferred to -ci- [Keith Falconer has shortened the incipits of the text file in order to put spaces between some of the fields and bring the total line length down to 75 characters. In practice this should make little difference to the readability of the original file, which can still be imported into a database programme. The original dBASE file is also available on request from Prof. Hiley. Field 3 GATTUNG gives the genre of the chant, using the following abbreviations: In Introit InP Psalm verse for the introit InR Versus ad repetendum for the introit Gr Gradual GrV Verse for gradual Tc Tractus (verses are not distinguished) Al Alleluia AlV extra verse for alleluia Of Offertory OfV Verse for offertory Cm Communion CmP Psalm verse for the communion CmR Versus ad repetendum for the communion An Antiphon Va Varia In addition, Ru has been used to provide space for a rubric. The denomination of the formulary follows the practice in Hesbert's indices, not that of the sources. Ru is always 00 in field 2. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Field 4 INCIPIT gives the text incipit. An asterisk * is used in the case of a few items such as offertory verses who ordering within the formulary is not the same in all sources. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fields 5-10 M, R, B, C, K, S show which of Hesbert's six sources contain the item. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prof. Dr. D.
