CHARTRES 520 - DATABASE This electronic index was created with the programme dBASE III PLUS to generate indices for the facsimile of manuscript Chartres 520 published as Vol.4, Missale Carnotense, edited by David Hiley in the series Monumenta Monodica Medii Aevi (Kassel, Bärenreiter, 1992). It is placed here at the disposal of colleagues in accordance with the aims of the IMS Study Group 'Cantus Planus', which promotes cooperation in computer-assisted projects and the exchange of data in electronic form. [Keith Falconer has edited the original dBASE file in order to put spaces between the fields and bring the whole down to 75 characters in width. A careful perusal of the file will show that the inc_2 and nb fields have been erased and their contents transferred to the incipit field of a new record in every case. The info field, which contains some of the most important information about the manuscript, has had to be combined with the incipit field to a considerable extent, and this has damaged the original integrity of the database file. Thus the present file can be searched using a text editor or word processor (better still a text scanner such as 'grep'), but there is now little point in trying to recover the original state of the dBASE file, which is in any case available privately from Prof. Hiley.
