Qualification and Application

Qualification

The qualification for the master program is given by:

1. a university degree or comparable degree with a minimum of a three year study program of bachelor biology (or a related subject*) with a minimum overall grade of 2,5 (german grading system)

* Please note: Following subjects are not related to "Biology" and are not qualified: Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Pharmacy, Medicine
  • If the minimum overall grade of 2,5 is not achieved, an oral entrance examination (aptitude test) has to be passed. Information on the test see below!
  • If the bachelor certificate cannot be present by the application deadline, a transcript of records with a minimum of 150 credit points, showing the preliminary overall grade, has to be presented.
  • If the bachelor certificate cannot be presented by the registration deadline, a preliminary registration (matriculation) is possible.
    Please note, module examinations can only be successfully completed when the matriculation is definitive.
    If the documents cannot be presented by the end of the first semester, an automated exmatriculation is initiated. For continuation of the study, a new application is necessary with the required documents presented by the application deadline.
2. a proof of English language skills, level B2 (GER, common European frame of reference)

If the proof of English language skills cannot be presented by the deadline of application you can still apply.

If you are accepted to the program the proof has to be provided by the end of the first semester after you have started the program.
Please note, module examinations can only be successfully completed when the matriculation is definitive.
If the proof cannot be presented by the end of the first semester, you will be de-registered. For continuation of the study, a new application is necessary with the required documents presented by the application deadline.
3. Applicants with a degree from a non-German speaking institute have to proof basic German language skills.

This can be provided by a German language course (minimum of 120 hours) or by proof of a German language level of A1 (GER, common European frame of reference).

If the proof of basic German language skills cannot be presented by the deadline of application you can still apply.

Please note, module examinations can only be successfully completed when the matriculation is definitive.

If you are accepted to the program the proof has to be provided by the end of the first year after you have started the program.

If the proof cannot be presented by the end of the first year, you will be de-registered.

Proof of English language skills, level B2

Proof by a school- or university certificate
  • “Abitur” school certificate (obtained in Germany) if,
    • the graduation dates back no longer than 5 years
    • B2 is shown on the certificate
    • or English as 1. or 2. language has been taken up until school year 12 and a minimum of 5 points have been achieved.
  • certificate of a subject-linked university entrance qualification (fachgebundene Hochschulreife) of a private or public “Fachoberschule” or “Berufsoberschule” if,
    • the graduation dates back no longer than 5 years
    • a minimum grade of 4 (“ausreichend”) is achieved in the subject English
  • school certificate obtained in an English speaking country (Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, UK, USA); certificate as proof
  • Bachelor- or Master certificate of an English study program; proof of the university, that the courses were in English
  • Bachelorthesis written in English (proof of the supervisor); students of the Uni Regensburg do not need a proof of the supervisor
Proof by an English test (not older than 2 years)
  • Cambridge ESOL (English for speakers of other languages), FCE (First Certificate in English) Grade A; Information about the test, see www.cambridgeenglish.org
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum of 79 points achieved; Information about the test, see www.ets.org/toefl (TOEFL institutional code Uni Rgbg. = 0401)
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with a minimum level of  6,5; Information about the test, see  www.ielts.org
  • DAAD proof of language skills povided by a language center of an university; level B2 in all three language facilities.

Nachweis Englisch Niveau B2

Hinweis! Liegt der Englischnachweis zum Zeitpunkt der Bewerbung und Einschreibung in den Master noch nicht vor, erfolgt die Immatrikulation vorläufig unter der auflösenden Bedingung, dass dieser bis spätestens zum Ende des ersten Semesters vorgelegt wird.

Modulprüfungen können erst nach endgültiger Einschreibung absolviert werden.

Wird der Nachweis nicht vorgelegt, erfolgt die Exmatrikulation am Ende des Semesters, und es muss bei Bedarf ein erneuter Antrag auf Zulassung gestellt, wobei dann der Nachweis zum Bewerbungszeitpunkt vorgelegt werden muss.

Möglicher Nachweis englischer Sprachkenntnisse auf dem Niveau B2 des Gemeinsamen Europäischen Referenzrahmens (GER)

Nachweis über einen Schul- oder Studienabschluss
  • Abiturzeugnis (in Deutschland erworben), wenn
    • der Abschluss nicht mehr als 5 Jahre zurückliegt,
    • mindestens B2 im Zeugnis ausgewiesen ist,
    • bzw. Englisch als 1. oder 2. Fremdsprache mindestens bis zur Jahrgangsstufe 12 geführt wurde und mindestens 5 Punkte erreicht wurden.
  • Zeugnis der fachgebundenen Hochschulreife einer öffentlichen oder staatlich anerkannten Fachoberschule oder Berufsoberschule, wenn
    • der Abschluss nicht mehr als 5 Jahre zurückliegt,
    • mindestens die Note „ausreichend“ im Fach Englisch erreicht wurde.
  • Schulabschluss in englischsprachigem Land (Australien, Kanada, Irland, Neuseeland, UK, USA); Abschlusszeugnis als Nachweis.
  • Bachelor- oder Masterabschluss in englischer Sprache; Formloser Nachweis der Hochschule, dass in Englisch unterrichtet wurde.
  • Bachelorarbeit wurde in Englisch verfasst; Formlose Bestätigung des Betreuers der Arbeit; Studierende der Uni Regensburg benötigen keine Bestätigung des Betreuers.
Nachweis über einen Englischtest (nicht älter als 2 Jahre)
  • Versant English Placement Test (VEPT). Der Test wird von der Universität Regensburg angeboten, und kostet für an der Universität Regensburg immatrikulierte Studierende 20,- € und für nicht immatrikulierte 30,- € (Stand SS 22)
  • Cambridge ESOL (English for speakers of other languages), FCE (First Certificate in English) Grade A; Infos zum Test unter www.cambridgeenglish.org
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) mit mindestens 79 Punkten; Info zum Test unter www.ets.org/toefl  (TOEFL Code-Nummer der UR = 0401)
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) mit mindestens Niveaustufe 6,5; Info zum Test unter www.ielts.org.
  • DAAD Sprachnachweis ausgestellt von einem Sprachenzentrum an einer Hochschule; B2 in allen drei Sprachfertigkeiten nötig.
Nachweis über einen Sprachkurs (nicht älter als 2 Jahre)
  • Sprachkurse der Uni Regensburg (Aufbaukurs 3/4); link!
  • Sprachkurse an anderen Hochschulen, die Niveau B2 bescheinigen.

Proof of basic German language skills.

Applicants with a degree from a non-German speaking institute have to proof basic German language skills.

This can be provided by a German language course (minimum of 120 hours) or by proof of a German language level of A1 (GER, common European frame of reference).

If the proof of basic German language skills cannot be presented by the deadline of application you can still apply. If you are accepted to the program the proof has to be provided by the end of the first year after you have started the program.

Application deadlines

The online application is open:

  • from May 1st till June 15th (= deadline) for the winter semester starting in October each year
  • from November 1st till December 15th (= deadline) for the summer semester starting in April each year


After the application deadlines, the examination committee will review the application documents. The letter of either admission, invitation to the aptitude test or rejection will be sent by the end of January (application for summer) or end of July (application for winter).

Erforderliche Dokumente, die hochgeladen werden müssen:

  • Abiturzeugnis mit dem Nachweis der Englischkenntnisse (mind. Level B2); als Scan (Beglaubigung nicht notwendig)
  • Nachweis der Englischkenntnisse (level B2), falls dies mit dem Abiturzeugnis nicht nachgewiesen werden kann

Please note!  Applications without a module catalogue showing the contents of the courses can not be considered.

A list of courses with only the title of the courses and without the contents of the courses is not sufficient for reviewing the application!

English language skills B2

for example:

  • IELTS (min. 6,5)

APS certificate
Students from India, China and Vietnam have to present the APS certificate.
The APS certificate does not have to be attached to the application documents. However, when acceptet to the programm, it has to be uploaded during the enrolment procedure.
It is also needed to proceed with their German Student VISA application.

Please Note!

  • Only applications with the complete documents will be processed!
  • All documents have to be translated in English or German by a sworn translator (certified translation). Documents in another language will not be accepted!
  • For the application a simple copy of your documents (in its original language) and a simple copy of its translation in English or German are sufficient.
  • Only when enrolling at University later, the original documents have to be presented. Without the original documents, enrolment ist not possible!

Registration for applicants with a Bachelor degree from the University of Regensburg

Die Umschreibung vom Bachelor- in den  Masterstudiengang der Biologie erfolgt in der Studentenkanzlei während der Rückmelde- oder Einschreibephase; Termine siehe Studentenkanzlei (zulassungsfreie Fächer)!

Benötigte Dokumente zur Umschreibung

  • Antrag auf Studiengangswechsel (siehe!); das Formular steht im Campus-Portal Bewerbung / Einschreibung zum download.
  • Schreiben (Zusage oder bedingte Zusage) von Herr Prof. Brembs, dem Vorsitzenden des Prüfungsausschuss Biologie, welches Sie nach der Bewerbung per Post erhalten.
  • ggf. Bestätigung über bestandene Eignungsprüfung (diese wird gleich im Anschluss an die Prüfung von den Prüfern ausgehändigt)
  • Bachelorzeugnis oder Flexnow-Ausdruck mit Angabe der endgültigen Bachelornote
  • und alle weiteren, von der Studentenkanzlei geforderten Unterlagen.

Wenn die Bachelor-Endnote bis zur Rückmeldefrist bekannt ist:

  • wenn Note von mind. 2,5 erreicht wurde:

Umschreibung in den Masterstudiengang innerhalb der Rückmeldefrist. 

  • wenn Note von mind. 2,5 nicht erreicht wurde:
  1. Verlängerung der Rückmeldefrist bis Semesterende in der Studentenkanzlei beantragen
  2. Anmeldung zur Eignungsprüfung bei Studiengangskoordinatorin
  3. nach bestandener Eignungsprüfung Umschreibung innerhalb der verlängerten Rückmeldefrist in den Masterstudiengang

Wenn die Bachelor-Endnote bis zur Rückmeldefrist nicht bekannt ist:

  • Vorläufige (Doppel-)Einschreibung in den Master Biologie. Die Einschreibung in den Bachelor bleibt bis zum Abschluss des Bachelorstudiums bestehen. Wenn Bachelorstudium abgeschlossen ist, d.h. die Endnote bekannt ist, erfolgt (ggf. nach bestandener Eignungsprüfung) die endgültige Einschreibung in den Master. Modulprüfungen können in diesem Fall erst nach endgültiger Einschreibung absolviert werden.

Für Bewerber von außerhalb gilt:

Falls bis zum Vorlesungsbeginn im jeweiligen Semester das Bachelor-Zeugnis nicht vorliegt, jedoch eine Zulassung aufgrund eines beglaubigten Nachweis über bisherige Prüfungsleistungen, bzw. ein Nachweis über die erfolgreich abgelegte Eignungsprüfung, erfolgt die Einschreibung in den Masterstudiengang vorläufig.  Das Bachelorzeugnis kann bis zum Ende des ersten Semesters nachgereicht werden. Wenn Bachelorstudium abgeschlossen ist, d.h. die Endnote bekannt ist, erfolgt (ggf. nach bestandener Eignungsprüfung) die endgültige Einschreibung in den Master. Modulprüfungen können in diesem Fall erst nach endgültiger Einschreibung absolviert werden.

Oral entrance examination / aptitude Test (Eignungsprüfung)

If you do not achieve the minimum overall grade of 2,5 in your Bachelor, you have to pass an oral entrance examination (aptitude test).

Registration for the test

You have to register per E-Mail (elisabeth.brunner@ur.de) and choose the period of the test. Dates and application deadlines for the next semester see one block below.

Periods of the aptitude test:

  • for a start in the winter semester
    • in July (last week of the lecture period of the summer semester) or
    • two to three weeks before the start of the lecture period in the winter semester.
  • for a start in the summer semester
    • in January/February (last week of the lecture period of the winter semester) or
    • two to three weeks before the start of the lecture period in the summer semester.

You have to choose the period of the aptitude test when you register for the test.

About two weeks before the test you will receive the date, time and room of the test and the names of the three examiner.

The test is conducted as an oral peer review by three examiners (botany, zoology, molecular biology) with a duration of 30 minutes. Usually the test is in German; on demand the test can be held in English (please let us now when you register for the test).

Examination syllabus encompasses the content of the bachelor biology degree (cytology, anatomy, physiology and systematics of animals, plants and microorganisms, ecology, neurobiology, ethology, developmental biology, evolutionary biology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics and the chemical and physical elements of biology).

As an additional help for preparing for the test the student council provides a collection of questions from previous aptitude tests. Please note that this list does not represent the content of the test!!! It is only a selection of questions from previous tests. Other and/or additional questions are possible.

Grading

The aptitude test is graded by the examiners on basis of the competences of the applicant meeting the requirements of the master program in biology.

The finale grade is calculated by the grade of the aptitude test with 50% and the grade of the Bachelor degree with 50%. The test is passed with the minimum overall grade of 2,5.

Failed aptitude tests may be repeated once.

Termine Eignungsprüfungen SS 24

Die Eignungsfeststellungsprüfungen für einen Start im SS 24 werden in drei Zeiträumen angeboten.

1. Zeitraum: 05. bis 09.02.2024; Anmeldefrist bis 14.01.2024

2. Zeitraum: 02. bis 05.04.2024, Anmeldefrist bis 18.02.2024

3. Zeitraum: 15. bis 18.04.2024, Anmeldefrist bis 18.02.2024

Places in some focus or secondary subjects may be restricted. The acceptance for the master program is no assurance for a place in the desired subjects. Please inform yourself ahead of application if a place would be available in the desired subject. Just contact the Professor in charge of the module.
