  • Diploma thesis at the Institute of Microbiology, University of Regensburg, Germany, Topic: “Isolation and characterization of members of the order Methanococcales” (August 1982);
  • Ph. D. (Dr. rer. nat.) at the University of Regensburg, Germany; Supervision: Prof. Dr. Karl O. Stetter; Title of dissertation: “Isolation, characterization, and taxonomy of mesophilic, metal-mobilizing bacteria“ (05. 11. 1987).

SCIENTIFIC CAREER:

  • November 1987 till May 1990: Postdoctoral fellow at the University of Regensburg, Germany
    Topic: Microbiological, technological and molecular investigations on the oxidation and reduction of economically relevant ores.
  • Since June 1990: permanent position at the Institute of Microbiology and Archaea Center, University of Regensburg; Germany; since 2013: Academic director

RESEARCH TOPICS:

  • Physiology and molecular biology of Nanoarchaeum equitans; and Ignicoccus hospitalis;
  • Energy conservation, metabolic activities, and membrane transporters in in the different compartments of Ignicoccus hospitalis;
  • Survival of thermophilic and hyperthermophilic Archaea in space;
  • Planetary protection;
  • Photodynamic inactivation of microorganisms;
  • Supervision of the fermentation plant, coordination of cell delivery
