Master's Thesis

The topic of the thesis has to be chosen from a scientific area in one of the core or elective module selected by the student. It is an examination concluding the scientific education, showing that the student is able to treat a problem within the biological scientific field with scientific methods presenting the results in an appropriate, immaculate and understandable manner.

Registration

Before registration the core modules and the elective module respectively have to be completed (the final module examination inclusive). In addition, at least 8 CP from the qualificatin module have to be achieved. The remaining credit points of the qualification module can be collected while working on the master thesis, however, have to be completed before submitting the thesis.

The master thesis has to be registered at the examination office (Prüfungssekretariat) of the faculty at least four weeks before starting. Registration form - download ('Antrag auf Zulassung zur Masterarbeit Biologie')!

Duration of the thesis

The duratin of the thesis is usually nine months. It has to be submitted before nine months after registration and can not be submitted before six months after registration. By exception and if substantiated by the supervisor, the duration can be extended for further three months (total 12 months). If applicable a notice with an explanation of the reason for extension and the signature of the supervisor has to be submitted in advance at the examinatin office. See also 'deadlines'.

Caution! If the master thesis will be submitted shortly after the beginning of a new semester the semester fee for the new semester has to be paid. However, if the de-registration takes place within five weeks of the new semester, the semester fee will be reimburst. For reimbursment contact the Registrar's office.

Supervision

The supervisor of the master thesis has to be a professor or associate professor and be member of the faculty of biology and preclinical medicine.

External master thesis

A master thesis conducted outside of the faculty (e.g. at the 'Klinikum' Regensburg) in one of the elective modules (Wahlmodule) has to be approved by the examination board of the faculty of biology and preclinical medicine. The instructor of the external thesis (professor or associate professor) will than be the second referee of the thesis. A member of the faculty of biology and preclinical medicine (professor or associate professor) has to agree to be supervisor (first referee) of the external thesis and declare this on the registration form. Assesment of the thesis

The thesis is assesed by the supervisor (first referee) and a second referee. Both have to be a professor or associate professor of the faculty of biology and preclinical medicine. Exception external master thesis - see above!

Form of the thesis

The master thesis can be written in German or English and has to include a summary in German and English. By the deadline of the thesis three copies have to be submitted at the examination office.
