University didactic counseling

We are happy to support lecturers of all faculties who wish to reflect on their individual teaching performance and to further improve it.

  • In teaching observations we visit one of your courses and analyze your teaching style afterwards. On request the presentation will also be video recorded.
  • Through teaching advice we support you individually with developing or revising a concept for your course.
  • Through Teaching Analysis Polls (TAP), i.e. with the help of qualitative surveys, we analyze which aspects of your teaching your students find helpful with regard to developing their skills, and how you can support your students even more in developing these skills.
  • With the help of presentation coaching you will be supported in further developing your individual strengths in course presentations.

All counseling offers can be recognized for the Zertifikat Hochschullehre Bayern.


Lesson observation

Aim and focus of lesson observations

A lesson observation gives you the opportunity to reflect on your own procedures and actions in concrete teaching situations together with a member of the university didactic team of the ZHW. The lesson observation is not an evaluation or correction, but serves as feedback for the further development of your professional teaching. You decide what the focus of the feedback should be and as such you determine, which aspects will be emphasized during the lesson observation.

Preferences for the observation may include:

  • Structure and contents of the course (Are the contents presented comprehensibly? Is the sequence of the course transparent?)
  • Atmosphere in the course (Is the atmosphere supportive for learning? What can I do to better get through to students?)
  • Teaching personality (How do I come across in my role as a teacher?)
  • Didactic organization (Suggestions and ideas, how contents can be prepared didactically)
  • Presentation style
  • Use of media/script/illustrative material

Proceeding

We guarantee that all information and data (e.g. conversation notes and observation sheets) will only be accessible to participants and will be treated with confidentiality.

  1. If you are interested in a lesson observation, please contact us at the ZHW (see  contact persons in the right column).
  2. In a short first conversation (via phone, mail or personally) a member of staff of the ZHW will choose a suitable lesson with you, during which we will visit you. Together with you we will decide, whether you would like feedback with or without video recording and whether you have a concrete preference for the observation.
  3. In the lesson we observe the situation most of the time from the back rows, in order to have a good overview of the teaching environment.
  4. After the lesson we will make an appointment for feedback.

Acceptance for the "Zertifikat Hochschullehre Bayern"

A lesson observation with subsequent feedback will usually be accepted for module D Reflection & Evaluation for the “Zertifikat Hochschullehre Bayern” (or the advanced level) with 4 credits.


Teaching advice

Aim and focus of the teaching counseling

Individual teaching advice gives you the opportunity to talk about concrete questions, requests, or problems regarding planning, organizing, and conducting your lecture with a member of staff of the ZHW and to find purposeful solutions. It can be an advantage to conduct a lesson with teaching observation or TAP before the teaching advice in order to receive a first analysis that indicates the relevant issues.

We guarantee that all discussed aspects will be treated strictly confidential and will not be accessible for third parties in any way.

  2. In a first conversation we clarify background and targets of the counseling
  3. Then we will arrange a personal appointment for the counseling


Acceptance for the “Zertifikat Hochschullehre Bayern”

The teaching advice will be accepted for module D Reflection and Evaluation for the “Zertifikat Hochschullehre Bayern” (or the advanced level). Credits depend on the length of the counseling.


TaP

Aim and focus of the Teaching Analysis Polls (TAP)

TAP is an effective feedback method which allows you to receive purposeful feedback from your students. With TAP you learn what supports your students, what they consider as obstructive, and which suggestions the students have in order to improve the teaching and learning. TAPs are most effectively conducted in the middle of the semester.

Proceeding

1. Make an appointment for TAP.

2. On the agreed day you will finish your lesson 30 minutes earlier, inform the students that TAP will be conducted, and leave the room.

3. We will ask small groups of students three questions:

  • What supports your skills development best in this course?
  • What do you perceive as obstructive?
  • Which suggestions do you have to improve the lecture/seminar?

4. The results of the small groups will be summarized systematically and written down.

5. The overall outcome will be sent to you and on request discussed in a feedback session.

Presentation coaching

Aim and focus of the presentation coaching

For the development of your teaching qualities we offer an individual presentation coaching (including video supported feedback).

Emphases for the observation may include:

  • Personal strengths and weaknesses
  • Authentic presentation style
  • Comprehensible illustration of the teaching contents
  • Confident body language and vocal expression
  • Handling of media and illustrative material
