Studium WS 1986/87: Beginn des Studiums der Fächer Geschichte, Englisch und Deutsch (Lehramt) an der Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn.
1988/89: Studium an der University of Oregon, Eugene.
WS 1989/90: Fortsetzung des Studiums der Fächer Geschichte, Englisch und Deutsch (Lehramt) an der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen.
Dezember 1992: 1. Staatsexamen in den Fächern Geschichte und Englisch in Göttingen.
Promotion

1993-1996: Promotionsstudium in Göttingen.
6. Mai 1996: Promotion zum Dr. phil. mit der Arbeit „Amerikabilder in politischen Diskursen. Deutsche Zeitschriften 1789-1830“. Die Dissertation ist mit dem Förderpreis des Deutsch-Amerikanischen-Akademischen Konzils und der Stadt Krefeld ausgezeichnet worden.
