Introduction in Forensic Psychiatry and Psychotherapy

Based on the legal basics for the Lack of Capacity to be Adjudged Guilty and the Measures of Reform and Prevention, the lecture will present the diverse disorders and diseases relevant for forensics. This includes, if possible, the introduction of patients to allow students to gain an impression of psychopathological diagnostics and forensic-psychiatric anamneses. The therapy of mentally ill offenders in forensic hospitals, forecasting legal prognoses as well as expertises are other foci of the lecture.

Select topics of the Forensic Psychiatry and Criminal Psychology

The course should introduce and work on selected issues of forensic psychiatry and criminal psychology. Students can suggest topics focusing on psychiatry/psychology and criminal law by themselves or choose from proposed topics. Lessons consist of theoretical presentations and practical exercises e.g. casuistics, interactive contributions, discussions of current research, teamworking or role plays.

Selected offender groups in forensic psychiatry: schizophrenic, female, and juvenile offenders.

Seminars will consist of theoretical presentations and practical exercises (e.g. casuistics, interactive contributions, discussions of current research or teamwork) focused on selected offender groups in forensic psychiatry.

Sexual deviance – diagnosis, therapy, prognosis

The relevant sexual preference disorders (paraphilias) from the forensic-psychiatric view - especially pedophilia and severe sexual sadism - will be outlined in the compact course. The problems with validity and reliability of clinical diagnoses will be addressed and different other approaches how to diagnose paraphilias will be presented. There will be given case examples and the possibilities of medical and psychotherapeutic treatment as well as their effectiveness will be discussed. Furthermore, the usefulness and limitations of actuarial instruments for the risk assessment of sex offenders will be examined.
