Karlfriedrich Herb studied Philosophy, Comparative Religious Studies and Psychology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn. In 1986 he completed his PhD about the legal and political philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
He participated in research projects funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG (German Scientific Community), by the Thyssen Foundation, by the Volkswagen Foundation as well as in DAAD funded (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst; German Academic Exchange Service) research projects in Paris. Karlfriedrich Herb was chercheur associé at the Centre de Recherche en Épistémologie Appliquée (CNRS, Paris) and research assistant at the Geschwister Scholl Institute for Political Science at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich.
For his postdoctoral lecture qualification (“Habilitation”), he analyzed the modern notion of liberty.
As an associate professor (“Privatdozent”), Karlfriedrich Herb taught Political Science and Philosophy at the LMU in Munich. He was a visiting professor at the Federal Universities of Recife and Campinas (Brazil); in 2001, he received an endowed professorship (“Stiftungsprofessur”) for philosophy at the Universität Ulm. Moreover he taught at the Hochschule für Politik (HfP) in Munich and at the Hochschule für Philosophie (HfPh) in Munich.
In 2001 Karlfriedrich Herb was appointed to the Chair for Political Philosophy and the History of Ideas at the Universität Regensburg.
