Prof. Dr. Udo Hebel

Professor Dr. Udo Hebel is the tenth President of Universität Regensburg. After his first term of office (1 April 2013 to 31 March 2017), the University Council re-elected Prof. Dr. Hebel for another term of six years.

about the President

UDO J. HEBEL is Professor and Chair of American Studies at Universität Regensburg. He taught at the universities of Mainz, Potsdam, and Freiburg, and was a Distinguished Max Kade Visiting Professor at Colorado College, Colorado Springs. He was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and at Harvard University.

He has published Romaninterpretation als Textarchäologie (1989), Intertextuality, Allusion, Quotation (1989), Transatlantic Encounters (co-ed., 1995), “Those Images of Jealuosie”: Identitäten und Alteritäten im puritanischen Neuengland (1997), The Construction and Contestation of American Cultures and Identities in the Early National Period (ed., 1999), Sites of Memory in American Literatures and Cultures (ed., 2003), Visual Culture in the American Studies Classroom (co-ed., 2005), Twentieth-Century American One-Act Plays (2006), Einführung in die Amerikanistik/American Studies (2008), Transnational American Memories (ed., 2009), Pictorial Cultures and Political Iconographies (co-ed., 2011), Transnational American Studies (ed., 2012) and New England Forefathers' Day Orations, 1770-1865 (ed., 2016).

He served as General Editor of Amerikastudien/American Studies, as Deputy Director of the Bavarian American Academy, as Chair of the International Committee of the ASA, and as the President of the German Association for American Studies. He is an elected member of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, MA, and as International Delegate an ex officio member of the Board of the German Association for American Studies. He is also the Founding Director of the Regensburg European American Forum (REAF).

He served as Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Literatures, as Dean of Research of the Faculty of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, and as Vice President of Universität Regensburg. Since April 2013, he has been the President of Universität Regensburg. Since April 2016, he has served as Deputy Chair of the Bavarian Universities' Conference; in May 2017 he was re-elected for a second term of two years.

The President of Universität Regensburg is appointed by the Bavarian State Ministry of Education, Science and the Arts. The President’s duties are formulated in Article 21 of the Bavarian Law of Higher Education (Bayerisches Hochschulgesetz, BayHSchG) from 23 May 2006.
