Application and Faculty Admission

Important

The following information is for doctoral candidates, who will receive their doctoral degree from the University of Regensburg.


For time-restricted research stays at the UR (without receiving your doctoral degree at the UR) there is a separate process for Application and Admission. Please turn to Ms. Marinova.


There are two steps of registration for doctoral candidates, who will receive their doctoral degree from the UR.

  1. Admission as a doctoral candidate by the respective Faculty. This admission is obligatory and requires a written confirmation by your supervisor.
  2. Registration as a PhD-Student at the Registration Office (Studentenkanzlei). The registration as a PhD Student provides you with a Student ID. The registration as a PhD Student is not possible without the admission by the faculty. This registration not compulsory; however it is recommended.


1. ADMISSION AS A DOCTORAL CANDIDATE BY THE FACULTY

After you have found a supervisor for you project, you have to be admitted as a Doctoral Candidate by the respective faculty.


The faculty will review your grades and certificates and determine whether your degree is comparable with a first degree in Germany, meaning whether a direct admittance is possible or whether you must supply additional academic achievements.

Before you begin your doctoral programme, you should closely study the doctoral degree regulations of your faculty. There you will find information about possible requirements for the doctoral degree, about formalities, the disputation and the length of the revision phase. You can find the current doctoral degree regulations below:


2. APPLICATION AND ENROLMENT AT REGISTRATION OFFICE

In order to receive a Student ID, you have to register at the Registration Office (Studentenkanzlei). This registration consists of two steps:

  • a) Application
  • b) Enrollment in person

2.a) Documents for Application

Application

The following documents are needed for your Application:

  • Application for admission
  • Proof of Ph.D. admission from the department and the faculty is required to register in doctoral studies (Ph.D. certification for international students/Promotionsbescheinigung )
  • A notarised copy of the original (and a notarised translation if the documents are not in German, English or French) of:
    - secondary school / High school diploma (before the university)
    - university diploma(s) and transcripts: Bachelor’s, Master’s, etc.
  • Proof of language-speaking proficiency in the case that your doctoral dissertation must be composed in German. If you are permitted to use a different language, the thesis language has to be stated on the "Promotionsbescheinigung".
  • a copy of your passport and one passport photo

Deadlines

For Ph.D. students the following application deadlines apply:

January 15 for the summer semester
July 15 for the winter semester

After successful application, you will receive a Letter of Acceptance via Mail. Please read the Letter of Acceptance carefully. Please bring the Letter of Acceptance with you at the enrolment in person.


2.b) Enrolment in Person at the Registration Office

Important: Please note, that for the second step, the Enrolment in person, you will need the originals and the original translations of the following degrees: high school, and university diplomas: Bachelor’s, Master’s, etc.
Please bring these documents with you to Germany.

You need to show your originals at the Registration Office (Studentenkanzlei) for the enrollment. They will not be kept and you can take them with you immediately after presenting them.

If the original degrees are issued in English, German or French, then you do not need a translation. If the original degrees are issued in any other language, you will need a certified translation.

Please submit the following documents for your enrolment in person:

  • Proof of Healt Insurance
  • Proof of transferring the student fee, 114,00 €
  • Original Degrees and Original Translations
  • Letter of Acceptance
  • Passport
  • Photo
  • If required, certificate of German language proficiency (if you will write your doctoral thesis in German)


More Information on the Proof of Health Insurance

It has to be issued by a German state health insurance, as for example the Techniker Krankenkasse at Biopark 2. In order to receive the proof, you will have to show your current health insurance coverage in Germany. This could be either your EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) or the insurance certificate by your current health insurance in Germany.

Preparatory German classes

If you take part in a preparatory German language course, you will have to transfer 614, 00 € ( 500 € course fee + 114, 00 € student fee).



The Enrolment at German Universities is valid always for 1 semester. For every new semester, you will have to re-register. Please see “Re-registration”.
