YES, If the dissertation is supposed to be written in German. In that case you need to pass the German language examination (DSH-Prüfung). At least 800 hours of German instruction (corresponding to completing the intermediate level) is necessary as previous knowledge. This previous knowledge must be enclosed in the application of admission. The German language test at the University of Regensburg normally takes place at the end of March or the end of September.
NO, if the dissertation can be written in English. The decision must be marked explicitly on the doctoral programme statement (Promotionsbescheinigung ) or if need be in the letter of acceptance of the faculty. For daily needs, knowledge of the German language is very useful.
The university offers courses for PhD students and postdocs every semester. These courses try to cater to the special needs of PhD students. Please ask the PhD-tutor for information on these courses.
