German Skills

How well should you know German to study at UR?

A good command of the German language is essential, as the lectures in almost all of the degree programmes at the University of Regensburg are held in German (with the exception of a few graduate colleges and English taught master programmes). Therefore, you should have sufficient German language skills on intermediate level if you apply for a regular Bachelor programme or Master programme.

Our international applicants have to pass a German language test (the DSH = Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber“) before they can enrol. This test must be passed on either level DSH-2 or DSH-3.

Applicants without proficiency in the German language will not be granted admission to a degree programme unless it is an English taught Master programme or a doctoral programme (see explanation below)

Please note: Applicants for the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, the Master of Science in Chemistry, and the Master of Science in Medicinal Chemistry only need to have passed the test with DSH 1.

Doctoral students who have the permission to write their doctoral thesis in a foreign language as well as students in an English-taught Master programme are exempt from this language entry requirement.

Preparatory language courses

Universität Regensburg offers preparatory language courses for those, whose German is below level C1. Applicants for Human Medicine, Dental Medicine, and Pharmacy cannot apply for a preparatory language course at UR. UR has only a very limited number of places available within these three degree programmes, therefore applicants do not only have to have excellent grades but also very good German langauge skills in order to receive a place.

Who is exempt from the DSH?

You may be exempt from the DSH if:

  • you have already passed the DSH at onother university,
  • you have passed an equivalent language test to the DSH (information about equivalent exams)
  • you are a Ph.D. candidate with departmental permission to write your dissertation in a foreign language
  • you are applying for an English-taught master programme.

The department of German as a Foreign Language provides information on the DSH. (German version only)
