Health Insurance

Why do you have to obtain health insurance?

There is no medical facility that is free of charge for guest researchers. If you need medical attention, you have to go to a doctor in the city or to a hospital. To apply for the "Aufenthaltsbewilligung" (residence permit), you also have to show proof of sufficient health insurance for the duration of your stay.

Social Insurance Agreement

Some countries have a social insurance agreement with Germany (all EU member states, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Norway, Switzerland, Serbia, Montenegro, Tunisia, Turkey). Members of these countries are legally obligated to take out insurance once they draw a salary. If you are from Turkey, Serbia and Montenegro, Tunisia, Macedonia, Croatia or Bosnia-Herzegovina, you only are insured for life saving services under the social insurance agreement. It is recommended that you take out German health insurance coverage.

Grants / Private Health Insurance

If you have received a grant you must insure yourself either through a private insurance provider in Germany or through one that your granter has taken out for you. It is recommended that you speak with your granter before arriving in Germany. You can obtain information about private health insurance from Mrs. Wunderlich, Mrs. Strobl or Ms. Marinova

Work Contract

If you have a job in Germany and draw a salary of over € 400 per month, you have to obtain regular public health insurance. You can only change to a private health insurance if you are earning more than the income ceiling of € 4,012.50 per month for compulsory insurance (as of June 2008).
