Marcel Schorpp
I was born in 1991 near the source of the Danube River and received my Abitur from the Fürstenberg Gymnasium in Donaueschingen in 2010.
I started studying Chemistry at the Albert-Ludwigs Universität Freiburg in the same year. During my Master's studies, I went to the University of Oxford to work with Prof. José Goicoechea for a couple of months. In 2020 I completed my Ph.D. studies at ALU Freiburg under the supervision of Prof. Ingo Krossing.
After a short post-doctoral stay at the same group, I moved to Heidelberg in the same year to work with Prof. Lutz Greb.
I subsequently moved to Oxford in Nov 2022 to work as a Feodor-Lynen postdoctoral researcher under the joint supervision of Prof. Simon Aldridge (University of Oxford, UK) and Cameron Jones (Monash University, Australia) until I received a call to the Univerisity of Regensburg (a few hundred km downstream of the river Danube) where I have started as tenure-track Assistant Professor for Inorganic Chemistry in April 2023.
Outside of the office/lab I enjoy playing with my kids and trying to catch up on sleep (whenever they let me).

I come from the beautiful state of Chhattisgarh in India. I graduated with a BS-MS dual degree from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Bhopal (IISERB). Before moving to Regensburg, I was working at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Hyderabad, India.
I am currently exploring structurally constrained, highly reactive phosphorus cations with open coordination sites that exhibit triggerable reactivity and their applications in Main Group Catalysis.
Apart from working in the lab, I like to go for a run.
I believe that good music and a cup of tea can make the day.
Francesco Cirigliano
I come from the area around Regensburg and am currently doing my PhD. I completed my B.Sc. in Chemistry at the University of Regensburg in 2022, where I investigated the functionalization of white phosphorus using NHC-stabilized copper complexes. In 2023, I joined Chris Slootweg’s lab at the Universiteit van Amsterdam as a guest researcher, where I developed a strong interest in cutting-edge frustrated radical pair chemistry and in silico modeling of challenging main group systems.
My current research focuses on the implementation of highly electron-withdrawing substituents in frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chemistry for the (light-)stimulated generation of tethered radical pairs (FRPs). With these systems, we aim to homolytically borylate a variety of demanding (C-H) bonds, ultimately progressing to photocatalytic investigations. My synthetic adventures are augmented by quantum-chemical calculations using state-of-the-art theoretical models.
In my free time, I like to learn about languages, history, and programming. Next to cooking in the lab, I also enjoy cooking for friends and family.

I am currently working on cationic main group heterocycles. I really like the small things in the lab, like colorful compounds or just working with a schlenkline.
I also really enjoy hiking in the region south of munich, where I originate from, and I also like climbing and running.
Moritz Kaufmann
I am currently working on synthetic routes to perfluorinated boryl systems and subsequent analysis of their behavior. Herein, I am also gaining insights into cutting-edge FLP/FRP chemistry as well as experience in both synthetic and computational chemistry.
I also love to see things burning in the fumehood [in a controlled manner ;) ] as much as I like Bavarian beverages and dishes [both in a less controlled manner].

Tin is my favourite element. Well, at least during my Master’s thesis ;). Right now, I'm trying to obtain some photocatalytically active tin compounds and hope to use them for C-C coupling in the future. In general, my favourite element is cobalt (for its pretty colours).
When I am not sweating in the lab, I love to be outside. That’s why my current hobbies are highlining, slacklining and climbing. It’s wonderful sitting on a line 80m above the ground and just feeling the air below and the nature around you!
Research assistants
Charmaine Berner
Born in Berlin but raised near the Alps, I ultimately moved to the beautiful town of Regensburg for my studies. After exploring reactions with geometrically constrained phosphorus cations for my bachelor's thesis and a research internship, I am delighted to be back in the group as a research assistant. Whether it's for starting material synthesis for my favorite colleagues or for cleaning ;). Apart from laughing (and of course working) in the lab, I really enjoy baking in my free time or binge-watching TV series. I live by “Good Food - Good Mood”!
