Trance und Tradition. Erweckungsbewegungen im Italien des 20. Jahrhunderts

This lecture will be held in German - this is an English summary of the talk:

Trance and Tradition: Revivalist movements in twentieth-century Italy

This lecture explores how revivalist movements in twentieth-century Italy modified existing patron-client relations. It then outlines the potential significance of these findings for theories of Modernity. Starting with the Jews of San Nicandro, where there was a collective conversion to Judaism in the 1930s, this lecture will then consider the cult of the trainee priest Alberto that first emerged in 1968 following his death in an accident. Finally, the relationship between revivalist movements and the internet, especially in the context of the Five Star Movement (Movimento 5 Stelle), will be considered here.
