Inseln spielen im Werk von Dumas eine zentrale Rolle und spiegeln zugleich die Situation des auf sich selbst gestellten Individuums wider. Im Grafen von Monte Christo wird die Insel zum zentralen Symbol und Rückzugsort der Titelfigur, die eine besondere Form eines sozial verträglichen und moralisch plausiblen Egoismus vertritt. Der Vortrag wird diese Bedeutungsebenen herausarbeiten und in einen Zusammenhang mit der Entwicklung der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft im Paris Mitte des 19. Jh.s bringen.

Islands play a key role in the works of Alexandre Dumas, reflecting the situation of the self-reliant individual. In The Count of Monte Christo, the island serves as a central symbol and a place of refuge for the eponymous protagonist, who represents a particular form of socially acceptable and morally plausible egoism. This lecture will explore these aspects of meaning in the novel, placing them in the context of the development of bourgeois society in mid-nineteenth-century Paris.
