Ottoman Legacies in Colonial North Africa (1860s-1920s)

M’hamed Oualdi (Paris)

The Mediterranean as an analytical framework has mainly been studied by historians from the Western Academia building on primary sources from archives located in the northern shores of the Mediterranean. In addition, the modern history of a region such as North Africa (the Maghreb) has often been perceived through colonial sources. We will argue that recovering the Ottoman provincial legacies in colonial North Africa could be another entry point not only to the history of modern North Africa but as well to uncover other geographies of the 19th and 20th Mediterranean.
