This module covers the fundamentals of sustainability assessment and the software used. Working independently in small groups, students carry out a case study on the sustainability assessment of a chemical product or process from various sectors of the chemical industry. In doing so, the groups go through all the stages of a comprehensive sustainability assessment. A peer-review process encourages critical engagement with the results produced by the other groups. The seminar paper is presented and discussed at a final session.

Learning objectives

Upon successful completion of the seminar, students will be able to obtain a degree:

  • explain the methodological principles of sustainability assessment and apply them to chemical products and processes
  • systematically model chemical value chains and assess them using software
  • critically interpret the results of a quantitative sustainability assessment, identify conflicting objectives and derive recommendations for action
  • present and discuss the analysis in the form of an academic seminar paper
