Public book presentation and discussion on housing policy in Germany and the USA on 24 June at the University of Regensburg.

Through the Roof: Housing, Capitalism, and the State in America and Germany

with Prof. Dr Alexander Reisenbichler (external link, opens in a new window) (University of Toronto) in conversation with
Prof.in Dr Anna Steigemann (DIMAS, University of Regensburg)

  • Time: Tuesday, 24 June 2025, 6:15 pm
  • Location: Room S. 214, Collection Building, University of Regensburg

The event will be held in English. You are also welcome to ask questions in German during the Q&A session.

What is it about?
Housing policy is one of the most pressing issues of our time - also in Regensburg. High rents, displacement, growing social inequality and the political organisation of housing are issues that concern urban society and urban planning alike.

Political scientist Alexander Reisenbichler (Toronto), currently a visiting academic at the ScienceCampus, presents his new book "Through the Roof (external link, opens in a new window)" , which will be published this year by Cambridge University Press. In his book, he takes a comparative look at housing market policy in the USA and Germany from its beginnings in the 20th century to the present day, offering new, interdisciplinary perspectives on the role of the state, capitalism and society in the housing issue.

Following the book presentation, Prof Reisenbichler will discuss current and historical dimensions of housing policy and their relevance for cities like Regensburg together with Prof Steigemann (Sociological Dimensions of Space, DIMAS, University of Regensburg) and the audience.

The event is aimed at:
Representatives of the city administration and urban planning; actors from politics, civil society and science; interested citizens from Regensburg and the region; students and the specialised public.

The event is organised by the Leibniz ScienceCampus "Europe and America in the Modern World" Regensburg, in cooperation with the IRE|BS - International Real Estate Business School (external link, opens in a new window) and the Department for Interdisciplinary and Multiscalar Area Studies | DIMAS of the University of Regensburg.

We look forward to your participation and a lively discussion!

Registration is not required. Further information can be found in the event flyer and on the ScienceCampus website (external link, opens in a new window).
