Zaroui Pogossian: Virgin Mary, Apostle Bartholomew and medieval narratives from Vaspurakan
This paper will look at the transformations of apocryphal stories about the Virgin Mary and Apostle Bartholomew in the context of medieval Vaspurakan - a region in the south of historical Armenia. I will discuss the reasons for the patronage of their cult and holy objects related to the Mother of God and Bartholomew in the 9th and 10th centuries, in the context of the rise of the Artsruni dynasty in this territory. The talk will focus especially on a miraculous Icon of the Mother of God, including the analysis of a 9th or 10th century text relataed to this narrative, and its importance for the local traditions of piety and patronage as an example of the way the apocrypha were lived and experienced. The interplay between written sources, holy objects and the architectural heritage will also be touched upon.
