Laura Nasrallah: “As you struck the chariot of Pharaoh”. Canon to Curse
A fourth-century CE curse tablet (defixio) from Antioch uses the drowning of the Pharoah as a key element in its consigning of a green-grocer to fever and worse. My paper explores this defixio within the larger phenomenon of the citation of authoritative texts in ancient ritual objects (such as curse tablets and amulets). I develop further Henk Versnel’s idea of a “poetics of magical charms” by placing this object within an ancient discussion of speech and composition, on the one hand, and within treatment/production of Christian canon in fourth-century Antioch, on the other.
