Mariano Troiano: "We agree to differ: Irenaeus of Lyon and his reading of Valentinian Christology"
We hope to demonstrate that once the literal reading of the Valentinian texts has been overcome, begin to emerge certain basic fundamentals common to the different Christian movements of the first centuries. In effect, a detailed analysis of Valentín's thought (fragment 1, Clem. Alex., Str. II, 36: 2-4 and fragment 5, Clem., Alex., Str., III, 59, 3) and its parallels with others Valentinian documents such as the Gospel of Truth (NH I, 3), the Tripartite Tractate (NH I, 5), and the Gospel of Philip (NH II, 3), refutes the separation expounded by the heresiologist and demonstrates the double nature of the Valentinian Savior, divine and human, spiritual and material.
