Vorstellung NMUN-Delegation 2024

Frequently Asked Questions:

Who can apply?

NMUN is an interdisciplinary project that is open to students from all semesters and fields of study who are enrolled at the University of Regensburg.

What qualifications do I need to bring?

Applicants should have an interest in the field of International Relations, and especially international organizations as well as global governance. You don’t need to have any previous (professional) experience with International Relations or the UN. You should have sufficient English language skills, but you don’t need to be an expert in that either. To get an idea of Model United Nations, the Regensburg MUN conference is a good first step to find out if this project is for you. Those qualifications can support your application but are not a must. The key qualification is genuine interest in the NMUN project and the work of the UN.

How does the application process work?

To apply for the NMUN delegation, please send your documents (in English, in one pdf) to the Project Coordinator. This must include

  • a letter of motivation (circa 1 page),
  • a tabular CV (1-2 pages) and
  • a summary of your previous university grades (FlexNow document).

The application deadline is usually at the end of August. Please check the current dates. You will normally get a response within two weeks after the deadline; the project itself commences at the start of the winter term.

What is the programme structure and workload?

The NMUN project consists of two parts: The weekly preparatory seminar in the winter term and the trip to New York.

During the seminar, students will give presentations on the UN and our NMUN country and write Position Papers that require extensive research. In addition, everyone will be closely integrated into all organizational tasks of the project, such as social media and fundraising. During the winter term, it is also mandatary for all members of the delegation to participate in the RegMUN conference.

The NMUN conference usually takes place at the start of April and lasts for five days. Additionally, there will be an exclusive additional programme in New York in the days leading up to the conference. The delegation of Regensburg will meet with UN staff, diplomats, journalists, NGO staff, and academics to discuss international politics and get a first-hand look into the diplomatic world and everyday life in New York City.

Thus, participation in the project is time-consuming. Students are expected to participate in the seminar on a regular basis and get involved with the both the academic and administrative tasks. This great effort is very rewarding: Participants will critically engage with and further their knowledge on International Relations and the UN, as well as closely work and grow together as a team, even before the delegation travels to New York.

Which country will the delegation represent?

Each year, the University of Regensburg represents a different country. The country will be announced at the start of the winter term. Regensburg has previously represented inter alia Viet Nam, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the State of Israel.

What can I expect from the NMUN experience?

In New York, you will take on the role of diplomat representing our NMUN country in a UN committee. You will learn and experience diplomatic conduct, how to give speeches in front of big audiences in English, how to negotiate, draft resolutions and get majorities in the final voting procedure. You will do all of the above not from your personal and political standpoint, but that of your country. This means that you will have to shift perspective and argue for policies that are you are not necessarily convinced of (that you maybe even decidedly oppose). This is one of the great experiences and learnings from NMUN – to get a different and more eventually more nuanced picture of world politics. Negotiations will be stressful, complex, and exciting, and you will share that journey with your fellow delegation members. NMUN is a collective effort: During the preparations and especially during the time in New York you will grow together as a team.

How expensive is the participation?

The participation fee for NMUN is 800€. This covers the costs for the conference itself and the hotel rooms during the conference. Additionally, you will have to pay for the flight tickets, accommodation during the additional programme as well as daily expenses in New York.

The NMUN project is undoubtedly expensive. To make up for those costs, there will be many fundraising activities during the winter term. You will also get support with scholarship applications. With those fundraising efforts and sponsors, we can often cover a significant amount of the costs. However, you must pay the money in advance, and successful fundraising is of course not guaranteed. We continue to work on making the NMUN more accessible and inclusive. If you have any questions on the finances, feel free to contact the Project Coordinator.
