The attractiveness of Regensburg which is located at the northernmost point of the river Danube, is founded on its ever-present traces of more than 2,000 years of history. In 2006 Regensburg was awarded the UNESCO distinction “World Heritage Site” acknowledging the unique character of the medieval city center and its magnificent architecture including churches, town houses, monuments and squares, above all St. Peter’s Cathedral and the Old Stone Bridge across the Danube. The old town of Regensburg is an example of a medieval trading center revealing the exchange of cultural and architectural influences in Central Europe. The city’s architecture is also characterized by the period when it was the political center of the Holy Roman Empire.

The University of Regensburg (founded in 1962) and the Technical University of Regensburg (established in 1971) and their respective campuses are located close to the historic city. The current student population in Regensburg is approximately 30,000 with more than 1,500 international students.

Due to the foundation of the universities and the establishment of international enterprises, Regensburg has recently been experiencing a major increase in prosperity with one of the highest productivity rates in Germany and a steady growth in population.

Boat trips on the Danube provide great opportunities to discover both the city and its surroundings. In the vicinity of Regensburg you can find the significant neoclassical monuments Walhalla and Hall of Liberation, commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria, as well as Weltenburg Abbey with its 1000-year brewing tradition and excellent beers. The cities of Munich and Nuremberg are situated approximately 110 km from Regensburg.
