The project examines a corpus of historiographic texts written in the transitional period between the Middle Ages and early modern times, employing means of narratology. These texts have rarely been dealt with in German studies. The focus is placed on the 'Chronicles of Bavaria', written in German prose during the 15th century by Andreas von Regensburg, Ulrich Fuetrer, Hans Ebran von Wildenberg, and Veit Arnpeck. The chronicles will not only be compared to each other but also to sources - including preliminary and competing versions - taken from different chronicle contexts such as universal, monastery and city chronicles, with correspondingly different spatial horizons, concepts of time strukturing and forms of interaction between space and time. The comparison is structured by the pattern of ancestral and dynastic narratives of origin, dealing with the emergence of the political actor's identity, and by narratives of monastery and city foundation, dealing with objectivations of this identity in the territory of the Wittelsbach dynasty over time. Through the criterion of the assignment or relationship of the actors to the Wittelsbach dynasty - including Charlemagne, who was genealogically appropriated by it - both the origin narrative and the founding narratives are related to each other and the founding narratives themselves are interlinked. The narrativisation of such foundational acts therefore lends itself to a comparative analysis that is both micro- and macro-structural.

The narratological question relates to the perspective that the authors adopt when narrating the history of the country with regard to the organisation of time and space, and to the far-reaching effects that this perspective also has on the conception of the actors, the affinity to narrative schemes and the narrative coherence formation in general. It is of particular interest to determine the position that the authors occupy within the process of a spatialisation of history in the formation of the modern map perspective alongside the itinerary perspective. However, the narratological question is also linked to the question of the author's position within the political constellations of the country. This ultimately leads to the question of the connection between the two: to what extent did the political constellations of the Wittelsbach territory favour narratologically tangible modernisation impulses in regional chronology and contribute to the fact that Aventin was able to state just a few decades after the turn of the 16th century that a chronica was nothing other than a mappa auf ein tisch?
