Lecturer and research assistant: Romance linguistics (Italian, French)

Current research project:

French in maritime transit zones during the 17th-18th centuries: new perspectives on the history of French standardization

Ports, ships and waterways are transit areas – an environment that displays complex social and linguistic structures coined by the particularities of the groups living and working in it. Portcities, for example, host hundreds of seamen waiting for their next employment, captains searching for new crewmembers and migrants waiting for their ships’ departure. In these contexts processes of language contact, linguistic levelling and koineization among the migrants and among the seamen take place and are an interesting topic for research.

Methodologically, the rich amount of written text production, triggered by the needs of maritime administration, commerce and nautical practices, like logbooks f.e., is of particular importance for this research project. It aims at giving a closer look at these written documents and the intense functional literacy linked to these maritime communities. By focusing on this kind of French used in ports and on ships and by developing a sociolinguistic approach to this particular domain of language use, this project gives new perspectives on French standardization processes during the 17th-18th centuries.
