Some of the most important fields of research have been developed in the natural sciences, life sciences and the humanities. UR’s status as a research-intensive university is underpinned by

  • 7 collaborative research centers funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG)
  • 6 DFG-financed Research Training Groups
  • 8 DFG-Research Units

UR is an active partner in an increasing number of EU-wide research projects and receives many grants of the European Research Council. Talking about research strength, it is also worth mentioning that the IOS, the Institute for East and Southeast European Studies in Regensburg, a research center with close research affiliations to the UR, was awarded the status of Leibniz Institute.

UR is a prominent destination for international researchers. A good indicator for this is the number of guest researchers funded by the Alexander von Humboldt foundation. Between 2012 and 2016 the rate of AvH funded Humboldtians per 100 C4/W3-grade professors was considerably higher than the national average: 34.9% at UR compared to 29.7% nationwide.
