Heterogeneity ("diversity") represents a challenge for pedagogy in school and extracurricular contexts. The research work at the Institute of Educational Science II examines the characteristics and conditions of heterogeneity in school and extracurricular learning settings.

Based on the findings, interventions and professionalisation measures are developed. Two closely related topics will be the subject of the Institute's research in the coming years:

(1) Dealing with heterogeneity. Learners have very different individual and environmental learning requirements (e.g. a heterogeneous range of abilities and talents, migration background). In order to optimise support, a precise understanding of these different learning requirements is essential. Individual and environmental learning prerequisites are analysed empirically. The focus here is on the entire performance spectrum and the personality area. The results are used to develop intervention measures and to implement and evaluate school development processes and professionalisation measures.

(2) Digital education. On the one hand, the use of digital media offers opportunities for internal differentiation. On the other hand, learners are also characterised by heterogeneity in terms of their digital education. The research focus is on digital education measures for dealing with heterogeneity. Qualitatively adequate and diverse methods of empirical educational research are used throughout all research content in order to answer the research questions posed.

Detailed information on the research topics of the individual organisational units can be found on the respective homepages of the professorships.
