The Society for the Study of the Christian East (GSCO) is a working group of academic institutes and individuals in the German-speaking world for the study of the Christian East. It has endowed a prize to promote academic work that is dedicated to the study of the Christian East and significantly advances the scientific knowledge of our field. The GSCO Prize is endowed with €2,000 and is awarded every two years.
It is primarily awarded to academic theses (doctorates and habilitations) at a university in a German-speaking country. These theses can come from the disciplines of theology, canon law, Byzantine/neo-Greek studies, east european and south-east European studies, religious studies, oriental studies and Slavic studies. The expert reports must be submitted with the application. The examination procedure must have been completed and must not date back more than four years.
A jury decides on the awarding of the prize. In exceptional cases, the prize may be awarded to several works. The prize will be awarded at a ceremony planned for the GSCO annual conference, which will take place in Marburg on 16 and 17 May 2025.
Applications with CV, certificates, the submitted work and the corresponding expert reports should be sent to Prof. Dr Jennifer Wasmuth (Georg-August-Universität Göttingen), who will receive the applications on behalf of the GSCO Board, by 31 January 2025 : Jennifer.Wasmuth(at)theologie.uni-goettingen.de.
