Epochal breaks and signatures in the history of the church and theology

Against the backdrop of the breaking down of epochal boundaries and definitions, the conference examines the significance of epochs and signatures in the entire history of the church and theology. Are they pre-formed or fixed by the times or were they subsequently applied to an era as an interpretation? How stable is an epoch concept with signatures that are considered characteristic? When does an epoch begin, when does it end? How fragile are epochal boundaries? Finally, what benefits do they offer, especially with regard to historiography and possibly also as a resource for contemporary theologies and societies, in which the concept of the "turn of an era" is a constant focus of public debate?
