Prof. Dr. Christoph Schubart

We are shocked and saddened by the death of our colleague, friend and long-time collaborator, Prof. Christoph Schubart, who tragically died on 21.03.2023 during an excursion to Jamaica. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, the participants of the excursion, and his students.

In December 2000, Christoph joined the Department of Zoology and Evolutionary Biology as a research assistant, later as a research associate and, from 2016, as an associate professor.

During this time, he offered students insights into the fascinating diversity of the animal kingdom with a combination of deep expertise, charm, and enthusiasm, and opened their eyes to the fantastic world of marine biology on his highly popular excursions. His focus on aquatic life, unique in the department, greatly enriched the faculty in terms of both teaching and research.

Christoph was a prolific international collaborator, carrying out numerous projects on the taxonomy and systematics of crustaceans with colleagues from all over the globe. In doing so, he involved numerous students from the University of Regensburg, and gave them the opportunity to contribute to a better understanding of the biodiversity of crustaceans, using both modern molecular methods and classical morphometrics.

Christoph was unwaveringly helpful when it came to questions about the reconstruction of phylogeny, and his expertise was a major contribution to the success of a wide range of projects on other organisms.

We will miss the friendly, open, and supportive nature of his interactions with all of us, students, and staff alike. We will miss his competence, and his enthusiasm. We will miss his insightful questions, comments, and advice. Christoph leaves a painful gap that we will not be able to close, though his legacy lives on in his prolific work and his lasting impact on his students and colleagues alike.
