Educational Science in Teacher Education

Teaching Education (EWS) with its departments of educational science in teacher education, school education and psychology is part of every teacher training program and runs in parallel to the study of teaching subjects.

Examination Regulations for Teacher Education Programmes

The general pedagogy section of the education degree in the teacher training programs is regulated in the Teacher Examination Regulations I (LPO I) and the associated Examination and Study Regulations for the university examination part of the first examination for a teaching degree at public schools.

Extract from LPO I § 32

(1) Subject-specific admission requirements

  1. When registering for the first state examination, proof must be provided of
    1. successful completion of the pedagogical-didactic school internship,
    2. at least 25 credit points from educational psychology and psychology, of which
      1. at least 7 CP from general pedagogy: including socialisation theories and empirical socialisation research; history of ideas, social and institutional history of pedagogy; pedagogical anthroplogy
      2. at least 7 CP from school education: including theory of the school as an institution and organisation, including personnel development; health and sex education; individual support and counselling
      3. at least 7 CP from psychology: including differential and personality psychology in the context of school; social psychology of school and family; abnormalities in the experience and behaviour of children and adolescents

35 ECTS credits must be earned in the subject of education. At least the following modules must be completed with a total of 27 CP:

  • Education - sub-subject General Pedagogy
  • EWS - sub-subject school education
  • Education - sub-subject Psychology

The remaining 8 CP can also be earned from teaching-specific courses from the university's programme or from subject-specific didactic events.

Events on offer

Lectures, seminars and other courses are offered each semester in the General Pedagogy section of the education degree programme of the teacher training programs for both the compulsory area and the additional compulsory points area.

Admission theses

For admission to the First State Examination, it is obligatory according to §29 LPO I (external link, opens in a new window) to prepare a written thesis for admission to the First State Examination. The written thesis is intended to provide evidence of the ability to work independently on an academic topic.

10 credit points are awarded for the thesis. It therefore represents both a course achievement totalling 10 CP and a component of the First State Examination.

The topic of the paper must be agreed with an authorised lecturer at least one year before registering for the first state examination.
