Focus of teaching

In accordance with the chair's dedication, teaching focuses on the following areas:

  • Empirical comparison of European political systems.
  • Teaching the relevant theories of political science systems and democracy research, which can explain the comparative empirical findings.

The theoretical and empirical focal points each consist of three subgroups:

The functional logic of democratic political systems

  • Defective democracies and democracies in crisis (processes of de-democratisation and autocratisation)
  • Parliamentary and presidential democracies, including their hybrid forms
  • Competitive and consociational democracy
  • Constitutional jurisdiction
  • Political regionalisation and federalism
  • European integration

Political actors and decision-making

  • Elections and electoral systems
  • Direct democracy and representation
  • Parties and party systems
  • Political extremism
  • Associations and interest mediation

Political attitudes and policy content

  • Political culture
  • Performance (including the welfare state and social policy)

The courses are primarily tailored to the Bachelor's degree programme in Political Science and the Master's degree programme in Democracy Studies, but are also open to students on other degree programmes. Details (group of participants, performance requirements) can be found in the comments on the individual courses.
