Plural Histories of Hospitals
Charity, Resilience and Transformation in the Longue Durée
What social and cultural factors contributed to the enduring nature of (pre)modern hospitals, some of which continue to exist to this day? The contributions in this volume examine case studies of urban welfare institutions in terms of their institutional, normative and symbolic character, and investigate their integration into social and economic orders across a broad historical and geographical spectrum. The focus is on long-term trends, but also on structural breaks. Hospitals are understood as historical actors whose practices of resilience, when compared, allow conclusions to be drawn about historical value systems, forms of socialisation and strategies of social stabilisation.
