After you read all information regarding the programme and you want to apply, please continue to read the following detailed information about the application process (e.g. current essay topic for the application).
Application
Application deadline: June 15 for the following winter term (starting in October).
Applicants who require a visa (e.g. from countries outside the EU) must submit all documents by 15 January.
If your application is accepted and you get an admission letter, please note that you have to be in Regensburg in October. Due to lengthy visa application procedures for some countries, we strongly encourage applicants from non-EU countries to apply at the yearly January deadline. Applications from non-EU countries might not be accepted at the June deadline.
The selection process is based on a two step system:
Step 1: Upload your documents in the CampusPortal (external link, opens in a new window).
Please prepare the following required documents/scans for upload as part of your application:
1) Diploma
Bachelor's degree certificate in natural or life sciences with a recognizable focus on immunology and the basics of cell biology, biochemistry and biology with an overall grade of 2.0 or better (scale 1.0 very good to 4.0 passed). If you do not yet have your final bachelor's degree certificate, please upload your current overall grade (e.g. from your transcript of records). Note on the overall grade: Certified proof of previous study and examination achievements totalling at least 140 CP, showing the provisional overall Bachelor's grade, is required at the time of application. The final Bachelor's certificate can be submitted after enrolment in SPUR and at the examination office.
2) Transcript of Records
A list of all lectures, seminars, internships and other parts of the study programme (“transcript of records”). This list should contain the following areas:
- immunology
- cell biology
- biochemistry
- more basic natural sciences, e.g. biology, physics, mathematics
- at least three-month scientific laboratory internship, for example, as part of the Bachelor's thesis.
3) Module/course description of your bachelor's degree program
4) English language certificate at level B2
Proof of sufficient knowledge of the English language at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR); this level can alternatively be proven by an equivalent TOEFL test (with 80 points) or other equivalent proof (e.g. first degree in an English-language degree program). Proof of knowledge of the German language is not necessary. There will be a course in the first semester to learn German at level A1.
5) Curriculum vitae (CV) with focus on internships and stays abroad.
6) High school diploma or other proof of university entrance qualification
7) letter of motivation
8) Essay
The essay should demonstrate your research focused orientation.
The essay should a have maximum of 1500 words (excluding references).
"Explain the underlying immunological mechanism by which current immune therapies alleviate allergic symptoms & suggest novel therapeutic approaches of how to treat allergies."
(This topic is for the application window in June 2026. It was published on May 12.)
If your application is accepted and you get an admission letter, please note that you have to be in Regensburg starting October 2026. Due to lengthy visa application procedures for some countries, we strongly encourage applicants from non-EU countries to apply at the yearly January deadline. Applications from non-EU countries might not be accepted at the June deadline.
Applicants who obtained their university entrance qualification or first degree outside Germany must also provide:
9) Identity card
10) HZB (HochschulZugangsBerechtigung) = document that shows your university entrance qualification
Optional:
Letters of recommendation, employment references and a list of additional (pending) achievements are optional. By the start of the semester in October, you must be able to provide proof of an English language certificate and have earned at least 15 credits in immunology, at least 15 credits in cell biology, at least 15 credits in biochemistry, and at least 15 credits in basic natural sciences such as biology, physics, mathematics, as well as practical prior knowledge in the aforementioned subjects amounting to at least 15 CP, proven, among other things, by a three-month scientific laboratory internship, for example as part of a bachelor's thesis). If you want to upload additional documents (e.g., bachelor's thesis or additional courses that you will finish before October) and that should be considered in your application, please sent these in a single PDF file. This is optional.
After these documents are assessed, based on a point system, the application will either be rejected or candidates are invited for the next step of the application process: the interview.
Step 2: Interview
A few days prior to interview, the candidates will receive a scientific publication to prepare for the interview. The interview will assess whether the applicant has sufficient skills to successfully complete the Master's degree program in Cancer and Immunity.
This includes:
- Interdisciplinary thinking, i.e. the ability to bridge several subject areas and to transfer knowledge between them, and thus the ability to grasp the breadth of the subject matter offered in the degree program.
- Methodological knowledge; in particular basic molecular biological and cell biological methods for laboratory work and mathematical methods for data analysis and statistical evaluation.
- Specialist knowledge; in particular a solid basic knowledge of immunology, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics and physiology in order to be able to work on scientific issues on this basis.
After the interview, the committee decides based on a point system on the suitability of the candidate for the Master´s programme.
Step 3:
The applicants receive an acceptance or rejection letter. The accepted students can enrol via the CampusPortal (external link, opens in a new window). The international students get help from the International Office (external link, opens in a new window).
Step 4:
Calculate your finances: The Master´s program does not have a big fee (around 400 euros/year like many other universities in Germany), but you have to calculate for cost of living (rent, insurance, books, food, bus tickets, ...)! The International Office has a good overview about the costs:

Step 5:
Come to Regensburg. The first lecture is in the winter term, which starts in of October. The programme is in person (no online classes) and full-time. All students must arrive by the middle of October.
