Biography
Prof. Dr. Gerlinde Groitl serves as Associate Professor of International Politics and Transatlantic Relations at the University of Regensburg, Germany. Her research focuses on U.S., German and European foreign and security policy, European-American (security) relations as well as the great power competition between Russia, China and the West in a changing global order. Her publication record includes regular articles on these themes as well as monographs on the American Christian Right’s global human rights activism (2007), on US civil-military relations in post-Cold War military interventions (2015), and on Russian and Chinese revisionism against the US-led international order (2023).
During the winter term 2021/22 Groitl served as Interim Chair of Political Science with a focus on Comparative Government at the University of Passau. Other academic activities have led her, among others, to the Center for Transatlantic Relations at the Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC, the university think tank LSE IDEAS at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Masaryk University in Brno in previous years. Committed to policy-relevant scholarship and cross-professional exchange, she regularly ventures beyond the narrowly academic realm. In 2020/21 she contributed to an expert group project at the German think tank Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) in Berlin to analyze long-term political developments in the US. In 2018 she was a visiting fellow to the “American-German Situation Room” project of the German Marshall Fund and the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) in Washington, DC. She is also, among others, an alumna of the “Young Leaders in Security Policy” program of the Federal Academy for Security Policy, Berlin.
Groitl is involved in the promotion of Regensburg’s Area Studies and interdisciplinary collaborative research initiatives. From 2017-2019 she was part of the executive committee of the newly founded Center for International and Transnational Area Studies (CITAS). In addition, she is a member of the steering committee of Regensburg’s Leibniz Science Campus “Europe and America in the Modern World”, a multi-year research initiative to explore the history and development trajectory of transatlantic relations launched in 2019.
