Exposure therapy in virtual reality (VR exposure) for adults, children and adolescents

As part of research therapies at our university outpatient clinic, we currently offer virtual reality exposure therapy for fear of heights, fear of spiders, fear of birds, fear of flying, claustrophobia (confined spaces) and social anxiety disorder. In the case of nicotine addiction , it is also possible to practise refusing an offered cigarette in virtual reality.

In this form of therapy, patients wear VR goggles and confront themselves with fearful objects and situations in virtual reality under therapeutic guidance until the fear has subsided, negative expectations have been corrected and new, more positive experiences have been made with the object or situation.in addition to heights, spiders and flying in an aeroplane, social interactions can also be simulated in virtual reality (VR) and can be used for confrontation therapy accompanied by a psychotherapist.

VR exposure for anxiety disorders is highly effective and also very attractive for patients. In the university outpatient clinic, we combine this form of therapy with exposure in vivo (in reality) or in sensu (in the imagination) as required.

In the university outpatient clinic, we offer VR exposure as part of regular psychotherapy and as a compact treatment. Interested parties can also take part in our studies on VR exposure . You can find out about ongoing studies under the"Research" tab.

In cooperation with the Psychotheraputic Outpatient Clinic for Children and Adolescents at the University of Regensburg, we also offer VR exposure for children and adolescents (aged 8 and over).

Compact treatment VR exposure

A compact treatment includes preparation, an exposure session in virtual reality, a follow-up session including the planning of an independent exposure in reality, as well as a (telephone) debriefing of this independent exposure and the success of the therapy. The compact treatment can take place on 1-3 dates. If necessary, further VR sessions or exposure sessions in reality can be added under the supervision of the psychotheraputic.
