Event type:
Lecture

The presentation introduces the Encyclopaedia of the Nazi Genocide of the Sinti and Roma in Europe, directed by Karola Fings at Heidelberg University. The project addresses longstanding gaps in research and public understanding surrounding the persecution and genocide of Sinti and Roma communities under National Socialism.

Beyond presenting the Encyclopaedia’s digital content and research aims, the session will explore the ethical, conceptual, and infrastructural dimensions of building sustainable digital scholarly resources and public-facing knowledge platforms.

Speakers:

Dr. Sarah Kleinmann is a historian and researcher at Heidelberg University specializing in antisemitism, antigypsyism, memory culture, and National Socialist persecution history, with extensive experience in historical education and human-rights research.

Sarah Grandke is a historian, curator, and doctoral researcher whose work focuses on displacement, migration, memory politics, and the history of Sinti and Roma communities in postwar Europe and contemporary remembrance culture. She defended her PhD in history at UR this month.

The public talk (in English) on Digital Spaces of Knowledge and Memory: The Online Encyclopaedia of the Nazi Genocide of the Sinti and Roma in Europe is open to all.

The talk will be followed by a practical workshop session (in German) for anyone interested. Please register by 3 June 2026 via: campus(at)europeamerica.de (opens your email program)

The workshop is particularly relevant for researchers and practitioners working with OES software or developing other forms of digital handbooks, glossaries, encyclopaedias, and other Open Science resources.

We would be delighted to welcome anyone interested in digital knowledge infrastructures, historical research, memory culture, collaborative scholarship, and innovative approaches to digital publishing and dissemination.
