What is a part-time degree program?

Part-time study allows you to complete all or part of your studies with a reduced workload per semester compared to full-time study. The Standard Period of Study for a part-time degree program is double the Standard Period of Study for a full-time degree program.

The objectives and content of the part-time degree program, including the modules and courses offered, the examination forms, etc., remain unchanged compared to the full-time degree program. In other words, full-time and part-time programmes are identical in terms of structure and content. The only difference lies in the time frame in terms of duration of study, examination deadlines and completion times.

What regulations and requirements exist for part-time study programs?

The examination and study regulations of the regular full-time degree program apply to part-time study.

In addition, the regulations for part-time study (external link, opens in a new window) at of the University of Regensburg apply, which set out the framework conditions for part-time study.

Part-time students must note one special feature with regard to enrolment: Part-time students may not be enrolled on another degree program at the same time and therefore may not complete a double degree.

What are the requirements for part-time study?

Counselling interview

If you want to enrol for a part-time degree program, you must meet the same requirements as for a full-time degree program.

You must pay the semester fee in full.

Before enrolling for part-time study, you must attend a counselling interview with the responsible degree program coordinator or program-related advice service. Proof of this counselling session must be submitted with the enrolment documents.

What is the standard and maximum duration of study for part-time study programs?

The standard period of study and maximum duration of study for part-time students are twice as long as for full-time students. The standard period of study and maximum duration of study can be found in the applicable study and examination regulations.

In the Master's degree programs in Computer Science, Data Science, Human-Centred AI and Media Informatics at UR, the standard period of study is four semesters full-time and eight semesters part-time. The maximum duration of study, i.e. the maximum time available to complete all the required coursework, is 6 semesters full-time and 12 semesters part-time for these Master's degree programs.

Is it possible to switch between part-time and full-time study programs?

Yes.

You can decide to complete your degree program completely part-time or switch between part-time and full-time study and divide your studies into part-time and full-time blocks.

A part-time block of your degree program must consist of at least two consecutive part-time semesters or a multiple of two part-time semesters (4, 6 etc.). Two part-time semesters correspond to one full-time semester or one part-time semester corresponds to 0.5 full-time semesters.

You can only apply to switch between full-time and part-time study in each semester during the re-registration and enrolment periods via the UR Campusportal (external link, opens in a new window).

You may switch between full-time and part-time up to two times during your degree program. Please note: You can only switch from full-time to part-time study up to the penultimate semester of the standard period of study. On the Master's degree program with four semesters (standard period of study), for example, you can therefore only switch from full-time to part-time study up to the third semester; you cannot switch in the fourth semester or later.

Which ECTS requirements do I have to fullfill when studying part-time?

When studying part-time, you may successfully complete a maximum of 40 ECTS credits per academic year (i.e. in two semesters).

If you exceed the 40 ECTS credits, the two part-time semesters are retroactively counted as four part-time semesters (two full-time semesters).

What do I need to bear in mind regarding the recognition of periods of study and coursework?

If you change your degree program from full-time to part-time, two part-time semesters will be credited for each full-time semester completed (regardless of the ECTS already completed).

If you continue your part-time degree program full-time, 0.5 full-time semesters will be credited for each part-time semester completed (regardless of the ECTS already completed).

Example: You start your degree program full-time. After one full-time semester, you switch to part-time study. The full-time semester then counts as two part-time semesters and you therefore start your part-time degree program in the third part-time semester.

The crediting of periods of study and ECTS from other degree programs is based on the crediting rules for the full-time degree program.

I am writing my Bachelor's or Master's thesis part-time. What do I need to bear in mind?

The processing time for Bachelor's and Master's theses in part-time study programmes is generally twice the regular processing time in full-time study programs. The completion times for all other coursework and examinations are identical for full-time and part-time programs.

Please note: ECTS are also awarded for the final theses (usually approx. 30 ECTS for a Master's thesis) - you should take this into account when planning your part-time study program.

What applies to part-time study programs with regard to semesters abroad and internships?

You can complete internships and study abroad programs part-time if the internship provider or the foreign university allows this - however, you are not entitled to complete internships and semesters abroad part-time.

However, by switching between part-time and full-time study programs, you may also be able to integrate a semester abroad or an internship into your course of study on a full-time basis.
