Women in Data Science Regensburg 2026: Data Science at the Intersection of Climate Research, AI Alignment, and Sustainable Mobility
REGENSBURG. Drone-based traffic monitoring, thermal Earth observation using satellite constellations, causal analysis of heatwaves, and large language models with structural fairness issues – the program of the sixth “Women in Data Science Regensburg” (WiDS Regensburg) (external link, opens in a new window), held on 18 June at Jahnstadion, made one thing clear: data science has long moved beyond academia alone and is increasingly addressing some of today’s most pressing societal and economic challenges. With around 160 participants, the conference was fully booked once again this year. Numerous regional companies supported the event.

FIDS member Prof. Dr. Udo Kruschwitz (Information Science Group) is one of the main organisers of WiDS Regensburg. In addition, several researchers from FIDS contributed their own research to the sixth edition of the conference. For example, we are pleased that Psychology Bachelor’s student Ann-Christin Täubert presented a poster at the 6th Women in Data Science Regensburg. The underlying research was conducted as part of an interdisciplinary collaboration between Prof. Dr. Gregor Volberg (Cognitive Neuroscience Group) and Prof. Dr. Bernd Ludwig (Information Science Group) at the University of Regensburg.

“Effective human–machine interaction in indoor navigation is particularly challenging – an artificial system ideally needs to know what a person intends to do before they actually act.
Recently, I had the opportunity to present our work at the Women in Data Science Regensburg conference. The event provided an excellent platform to showcase our interdisciplinary approach, combining psychology and information science.

“Decoding Action Intentions: Pedestrian Indoor Navigation in Natural Environments”
Key research question:
Can brain activity (EEG) patterns that predict motor planning in strictly controlled laboratory settings be successfully tracked and replicated in complex, real-world environments?
Methods and results:
- Data collection using a mobile 8-channel EEG system and a HoloLens while participants navigated a real university building
- Successful proof of concept through replication of previous laboratory findings in natural environments during initial tests
- Promising results with classification accuracies of 60–80% in predicting door and corner events based on EEG rhythms prior to movement onset
These findings represent an important step towards intelligent navigation systems that can better anticipate user intentions, thereby providing more timely and precise assistance.
