Prof. Dr. Stefan Schönig visited the Gianforte School of Computing at Montana State University in Bozeman to give two talks on current research from our chair.
Improving organizational cyber threat awareness (August 19, 2026)
The first presentation examined gaps between compliance frameworks (such as NIST and ISO/IEC) and the actual tactics, techniques, and procedures used by attackers. Drawing on empirical data comparing attacker activity with defensive playbooks, Prof. Schönig outlined an ontology-based approach that connects threats, vulnerabilities, and controls to help organizations prioritize defenses against realistic threats.
Process-based cybersecurity in industrial environments (August 24, 2026)
The second talk addressed vulnerabilities across integrated IT, OT, and Industrial IoT setups, where undocumented processes and shadow OT frequently bypass standard oversight. Prof. Schönig showed how Business Process Management (BPM) and modeling methods can identify assets and integrate controls directly into operational workflows, with runtime verification and AI-assisted model interpretation to ensure ongoing compliance.
Many thanks to the Gianforte School of Computing and Montana State University for the kind invitation, great hospitality, and engaging discussions!
