Every Threshold Tells a Story: Space, Power, Encounter
Barbara Wimmer-Bulin

What do doors, train stations, and staircases have in common? They are far more than just functional elements of architecture: they shape our everyday urban lives and reveal social power dynamics.

This lecture focuses on thresholds in urban spaces—both physical and intangible. The focus is on transitions between spaces that influence behavior, regulate access, and shape social encounters. Drawing on sociological approaches and illustrative examples, it becomes clear what a central role these often-overlooked elements play in the urban fabric.
