The department represents political theory across the entire spectrum of the subfield (including political philosophy, history of political ideas & scientific theory of political science).
A particular focus lies on the study of the theoretical foundations and objectives of liberal democracy: The future of democracy will depend on democratic societies adequately understanding and proactively shaping the opportunities and challenges of modern technologies for democracy.
The department therefore not only provides fundamental work in political philosophy, theory and the history of ideas, as well as the scientific theory of political science. At the same time, the department advocates political theory that combines historical, analytical and normative expertise in an application-oriented manner and collaborates with interdisciplinary partners to make the challenges and options for shaping democracy (e.g. in biotechnology and digital technology, ecological transformation) visible and to contribute to a factual and civil public debate about the future of democracy.
