Sustainability is an integral part of biology studies and research.

This reflects the fact that the protection of the biosphere is a top priority in the discussion on the goals of sustainable development.

The biology degree programme provides the scientific basis for understanding ecological interactions and the consequences of environmental pollution, biodiversity loss and anthropogenic climate change.

With the newly established professorship for nature conservation, research into biotic and abiotic interactions is to be further expanded and students can specialise in the field of scientific nature conservation in the Master's degree course Ecology, Evolution and Conservation (EEC).

In addition to nature conservation topics, the teacher training programs in biology also deal with issues of social justice and democracy education.
